Local and international artists recently performed at the first MIST Music Festival in Toronto, headlined by Filipino-American rapper EZ Mil and Philippine artists Barbie Almabis, Arthur Nery, and Alamat.

The producers say MIST stands for Music is Soul Therapy – which highlights their goal to keep Filipino music alive among young Filipino Canadians.

"We noticed that if we do not intervene, they (young Fil-Canadians) could forget the Filipino sound," said Odi Cabansay.

This sentiment resonated with the local band in the lineup and some audiences who discovered the music of Filipino artists at the festival.

"We want to promote and inspire the new generation to look back into their roots and enjoy our culture once again," said band Do's and Don'ts members.

Filipino singer-songwriters Barbie Almabis and Arthur Nery shared their love for music and their aim to connect with others through their songs deeply.

Almabis added that she has felt the pressure of switching industries. "But I always go back to why I decided to make music," she said. "It's just the love for it."

Nery, meanwhile, said he wants to create soulful music as an artist.

"I try my best to keep it as emotional and pure as possible to connect and have a space for everybody who feels the same," he said.

As for the P-pop group Alamat, known for blending modern sounds with Filipino instruments and languages – its members emphasized their advocacy for promoting Filipino culture through their music.

Non-Filipino fans even flew in from New York after their dance post on one of Alamat’s songs was selected, highlighting their preference for P-pop over K-pop.

"Our advocacy is to make everyone know about our culture," members of the group said. "This is important to us because some Filipinos are forgetting that we have this culture."

EZ Mil, whose hit song "Panalo" propelled him into the spotlight, said he still could not believe the success he has achieved – which includes being signed by Eminem’s Shady Records.

He also talked about the importance of representing his Filipino roots through his music and staying grounded.

"It’s easy to get lost when you’re in the glitz and glamor," he said. "But ultimately, you have to go home and a lot of people forget that aspect of going home."

The organizers aim to make the MIST Music Festival an annual event.

They hope to provide a platform for local and international artists – while keeping Filipino youths connected to their roots.
