Miss Universe South Africa 2024 withdraws from competition over health concerns

MANILA -- South Africa's representative to the 73rd Miss Universe pageant has withdrawn due to "health concerns."

In an official statement shared by Miss Universe South Africa on their social media, they announced the heartbreaking decision of their candidate, Mia Le Roux.



According to the statement, Le Roux wants to "focus on her health and recovery" and to "continue to serve her country with her full strength".

With her decision, Le Roux expressed her gratitude to Miss Universe South Africa's organization for their "unwavering support" during her time in Mexico as she competed for the Miss Universe.

Without disclosing details, the Miss Universe South Africa organization thanked Le Roux and her decision to withdraw from the competition. 

The full statement is as follows: 

"It is with deep regret that we share the news that Mia Le Roux, Miss South Africa 2024, has had to withdraw from the Miss Universe competition due to health concerns.

Mia Le Roux expresses, "I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me. However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength."

The Miss South Africa Organisation states, "Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period. Her health and well-being are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health. Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery," the Miss Universe South Africa said in its statement. 

South Africa has three Miss Universe titles: Margaret Gardiner in 1978, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters in 2017, and Zozibini Tunzi in 2019.

The 73rd Miss Universe competition will be held in Mexico on November 16. The pageant will be shown live on ABS-CBN's Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, Metro Channel, and iWantTFC on November 17.
