The widely watched telecast of Miss Universe in mid-December saw the Philippines’ Catriona Gray clinching the country’s fourth crown — but what wasn’t shown onscreen were touching interactions that followed her winning moment, specifically involving the Filipina’s two best friends in the pageant.

A video of what happened after Gray’s crowning was shared on Instagram over the weekend by Emma Strandberg, who represented Sweden in Miss Universe.

The clip sees fellow candidates congratulating Gray, but notably in tears were Strandberg and Helena Hauser of Denmark, who both gave the winner a hug.

Fans of Gray who closely followed her pageant journey since 2016, when she competed and finished as a finalist in Miss World, would be familiar with Strandberg and Hauser as the Filipina’s close friends in that competition.

That all three of them did not win Miss World, and would, two years later, become their respective country’s representative to Miss Universe, now appear to be a series of coincidences that reunited them in Bangkok.

“I am speechless, sister, and I can’t stop crying,” Strandberg wrote on Instagram after Gray won Miss Universe. “I am so happy for you. You did it, Cat! You did it! I am so proud and glad that you are standing there with the new title as Miss Universe 2018.”

She went on: “We could never ask for a better woman to stand there. Your personality, kindness and love for this world. You deserved this crown more than anyone else in this universe and I know that you are going to do a wonderful job! I can’t wait to follow your journey and I wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart.”

Hauser, meanwhile, has said she “knew from the beginning that Cat was destined for that crown.”

“It’s funny ‘cause I get so emotional when I see her on stage, so no wonder I cried my lashes off when she won!” she added.

Addressing Gray, Hauser also wrote: “Thank you for being my friend. I look up to you in so many ways. You have such a star potential, but yet you’re incredibly humble and down to earth. Thank you for our memorable moments and always calming me down when I’m nervous.

“The Miss Universe Organization just crowned the best Miss Universe ever! You deserve the absolute best in life, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings you!”
