Months prior to her actual Miss Universe bid, the Philippines’ Catriona Gray stood alongside the current and two former titlists — in a captured moment Filipino pageant fans would no doubt wish to be a foreshadowing of this year’s coronation.

The rare moment that gathered the three queens — Gray’s compatriot Pia Wurtzbach (2015), Iris Mittenaere of France (2016), and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa (reigning) — happened in May 2018.

They were in the Philippines for a series of engagements, notably their joint brand endorsement of local multi-level marketing firm Frontrow, and their guest appearance in Grit and Glam opposite winners of the World’s Strongest Men Competition.

At the time, Gray had been recently crowned Miss Universe Philippines, and was attending numerous charity and advocacy events as part of her national reign — Grit and Glam, among them.

It was after the event proper at the Okada hotel in Parañaque when Gray got to personally greet Mittenaere and Nel-Peters for the first time. The meeting was an opportune moment for the covering press to snap the money shot. Fortunately, the queens happened to be in line beside Gray, and they’re trained to do, were instantly ready to pose.

Speaking with press afterwards, Gray, a finalist in Miss World 2016, said she was going into her second international pageant as a “much more matured woman, with a lot more drive.”

“I’m really hungry for this,” she said at the time, “and I know the responsibilities that come with it, having worked with my charities before.”

Now, with only days away from the Miss Universe finale, Gray said on Friday she has exerted all her best, and admittedly even “overcompensated” in preparations, in the hope of securing a fourth crown for the Philippines.

Come December 17, Filipino pageant fans will know for sure if Gray’s photo with three Miss Universe queens did, after all, foreshadow her winning moment.
