Reigning Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa is counting down the days until she crowns her successor — and among the fond memories she will carry from her time as the pageant queen is the warmth and love of Filipinos.

Nel-Peters is in Bangkok, Thailand ahead of the coronation day on December 17, which will see 94 candidates vying to become the next Miss Universe.

In a sit-down interview with ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo, Nel-Peters opened up about the “bittersweet” feeling of handing over the title, after a year-long reign that saw her travelling to a dozen countries for charity work and numerous advocacies.

One of those stops was the Philippines — it was her first destination, in fact, after she was crowned Miss Universe in Las Vegas in 2017.

Over the past year, Nel-Peters has felt no shortage of support from Filipino pageant fans, to whom she said she feels grateful.

Apart from her two-time visit to the Philippines during her reign, Nel-Peters also has a recently formed personal connection to the country. Her boyfriend, American football player Tim Tebow, was born in Makati City, where his parents had served as Baptist missionaries.

Tebow’s family moved back to the US when he was 3 years old.

Nel-Peters, who shares a strong Christian faith with Tebow, said the NFL star continues to do “amazing work” in terms of charitable efforts in the Philippines. The Tim Tebow Foundation, she pointed out, supports various orphanages in the country, aside from operating the Tebow CURE Hospital in Davao City.

“The Philippines is a country that’s very close to both our hearts. He was born there. I know his parents would go back often, being missionaries in the Philippines. The Philippines was the first country I visited after I won Miss Universe! How crazy! So, yes, I definitely think it’s a very special country,” she said.

Referring to doing further charity work in the Philippines with Tebow, Nel-Peters continued, “It’s definitely a dream for the future!”
