MANILA – Winwyn Marquez was told by pageant organizers to guard her Reina Hispanoamericana crown with her life. And it’s easy to understand why.

During her welcome party in Manila on Monday, Marquez talked about the prizes she received from the pageant.

One of these is a replica of the Reina Hispanoamericana crown, which is made of rubies, diamonds, and silver and is worth $7,000.

“This crown is actually a replica,” she said, pointing to the crown on her head. “But it’s real, it’s worth $7,000. The real one has to stay in Bolivia. It’s a little bigger and it costs $12,000.”

“Sabi sa akin doon, please take care of the crown. Take care of it more than your life,” she added in jest. “Sabi ko, yes, hawak-hawak ko siya kahit saan ako pumunta.”

Marquez said she gets to keep the replica of the Reina Hispanoamericana crown. “The real crown has to be in Bolivia. But if the organization comes here, they’re going to bring the real crown.”

Aside from the crown, Marquez also won a cash prize, but the beauty queen opted not to mention the specific amount.

She was also given appliances, gowns, and other gifts. “I had to leave them in Bolivia kasi hindi kayang dalhin dito. They gave me a lot of appliances, gowns, they gave me a lot of stuff, basically,” she said.

Marquez is the first Filipina and Asian to compete – and win – in Reina Hispanoamericana, a Latina-dominated pageant.

She is the daughter of screen veterans Joey Marquez and Alma Moreno, and niece of former Miss International Melanie Marquez.
