Gretchen Barretto had a simple response to a follower questioning her daughter Dominique's apparent lack of fluency in speaking Filipino, which was the precise subject of an Instagram video posted by the actress Sunday.

The clip showed Dominique, upon Gretchen's request, to read a sentence in Filipino. Dominique appeared to have difficulty pronouncing the words correctly. When she did complete saying it, Gretchen could be heard saying, "Good job!"

The sentence was: "Kahit sobrang sosyal, kahit talagang super yaman ka, sobrang linis at maselan sa katawan, kapag kinagat ka ng lamok na may virus, wala kang magagawa."

In the comments on the post, Dominique wrote, "I'm so embarrassing."

Gretchen replied to her daughter with businessman Tony Cojuangco: "Never embarrassing, always perfect."

However, some followers of Gretchen had a different opinion, including one who asked why Dominique couldn't speak straight Filipino, despite being born in in the Philippines.

The follower said: "'Di ba she's born in Pinas, bakit hindi siya marunong mag-Tagalog? Buti pala ang anak ko, she's born in [the United Kingdom], pero she's good in Tagalog."

Gretchen responded: "Dominique went to the British School from age 4. That explains."

Gretchen was referring to the British School Manila, where Dominique studied "from beginning to end," or until she graduated from high school, as she wrote in a blog for Preview.ph in August 2017.

She went on to study fashion design in London, and graduated last year.

In previous video interviews of Dominique, such as with Metro alongside her mother in May 2018, she notably speaks completely in English. This was the same case in her YouTube vlog, which followed her adventures in London.
