TAIPEI - Laptops are definitely evolving thanks to Windows 10 and the Ink platform. Thanks to this new feature of Windows, which allows users to use a stylus or pen to draw directly onto a touchscreen, styluses and pens have made a big comeback.

At Computex, Asia’s biggest tech trade event held every year in Taipei, a number of high-end laptops were showcased with touchscreens and pens. Among the lot, the Asus Zenbook Flip S stood out.

The Zenbook Flip S is the Taiwanese tech giant’s latest entry into the 2-in-1 convertible laptop market.

Unlike normal laptops, 2-in-1 convertibles feature a touchscreen, which flips a full 360 degrees and folds into the keyboard, thus converting it into a tablet. This lets users get tablet functionality with the computing power of a high-end laptop.

It may be a bit heavier than the standard tablet, but convertibles were not really meant for people who just want to browse the net and play casual games. These devices are meant for power users who want to use tablets to create content. Graphics artists, in particular, love the new breed of convertibles that allow them to use pens to sketch and draw.

While there were also a lot of other convertible laptops showcased at Computex, the 13.3 inch Zenbook Flip S was the only one that boasted of a 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) display. Asus also claims that the Flip S is the thinnest 2-in-1 in existence, with a thickness of just 10.9mm.

HP’s Spectre X360 convertible, which claims to have a thickness of 10.4mm, may contest this claim about being the thinnest, but there is no doubt that the Zenbook Flip S is a supermodel that went on an extreme diet.

It is almost frighteningly thin and light, weighing just 1.1 kg.

Despite its thin looks and light weight, this 13.3 inch laptop packs a punch courtesy of its topnotch guts.

The top of the line model uses an Intel Core i7 7500U processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. Clearly, this isn’t a laptop that’s desirable only because of its looks, it’s also a device that can do a lot of heavy lifting.

This laptop is definitely worth a look if you’re an artist who needs a tablet to draw on, or if you’re a video editor on the go who needs a capable laptop that isn’t a pain to carry.

Ordinary users who just want to do some word processing, use a spreadsheet or browse the web however may be better off with a more affordable device.

The Zenbook Flip S costs $1099 or around P55,000 for the base model with an HD display (not 4K) and Core i5 7200U (not Core i77500U). The price gets higher with better specs.
