MANILA – “It’s life-changing.”

These were the words of chef and former “Pinoy Fear Factor” contestant Jose Sarasola when asked to describe his relationship with Japanese actress Maria Ozawa.

In an exclusive interview with the entertainment website Pep published on Monday, Sarasola said making their relationship public has been “overwhelming,” noting Ozawa’s popularity as a former adult film star.

“We’ve been on for a few months already, pero recently lang kami naglabas ng news and nag-post ng mga pictures together,” he said.

“It’s hard,” he continued. “Something very overwhelming din sa akin kasi matagal na po akong single, almost seven years. Having a new girlfriend, well, si Maria siyempre, as we all know, is an international star. Hindi naman siya local celebrity. Marami talagang mga haters. Marami talagang nagsasabi ng masamang bagay sa akin, sa kanya.”

Sarasola went on to note how he and Ozawa made adjustments in their relationship.

“I know medyo big words… [pero] life-changing. It really is talaga kasi she’s not just a regular girl. She’s really known in the whole world. So it’s an adjustment for me and for her as well. But then, importante is we’re both happy,” he said.

Their love story started when Ozawa visited Avenue 75 Sports Bar in Parañaque, which is owned by Sarasola, last year.

“We actually met here sa bar ko from a common friend who brought her here. Ever since, we kinda hit it off. She came here around last year, March or April,” he said.

When asked what they usually like to do together, Sarasola replied: “We like watching the newest movies that are out. We like trying different kinds of food since I’m a chef. Siya naman, mahilig naman kumain sa labas ng iba-ibang mga cuisines.”

‘FILIPINO TRAITS’

Sarasola admitted that he and Ozawa did not go through the usual “courtship” stage, saying that they just developed feelings for each other.

The chef, however, said he sees Filipino traits in his Japanese-Canadian girlfriend.

“Behind everything, parang she’s a normal, funny, makulit na girl. May pagka-Pinoy din siya kahit paano,” he said. “Although she’s Japanese-Canadian, may pagka-Filipino traits din siya. Hindi siya ‘yung typical na Japanese na medyo… medyo straightforward. Ito, may pagkakulit din, e. So I think that’s one of the main factors that I liked in her.”

As to how his family accepted his relationship with Ozawa, Sarasola replied: “Luckily, [ang] parents ko very open sa kanya.”

“She (Maria) is respectful sa parents ko, mabait siya sa magulang ko and lahat ng mga kaibigan ko. The past talaga wasn’t an issue.”

Sarasola has yet to meet Ozawa’s family, but the two are already planning to visit them in Japan.
