MANILA — Never did she think there would come a day when she would have to ask other people for food and water. No one would dare deliver to their home, recalled Tootsy Angara, wife of Sen. Sonny Angara, who had earlier been all over the news for testing positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Tootsy, speaking on DZMM Saturday, acknowledged that she was at the time terrified — not only of the possibility that she may never see her husband alive again, but also that she might not be able to feed her kids.

“I’ve always felt in control with all the challenges that we faced so far,” she told Fr. Tito Caluag, host of the special Holy Week program she guested in, which was shot from their homes.

“But this was the first time na talagang ‘complete surrender [to God].'"

According to Tootsy, there was plenty of moments during that difficult period — around the week before Palm Sunday— when she wanted to break down, but could not because she had to “stay strong” for their kids. She also recalled how she swallowed her pride, and began asking people for the most basic of necessities.

“You can’t be proud when you don’t know what to do. That’s when I texted people: ‘I need help. I need water. Can you send us food?’ I’ve never asked for food and water my whole life and that’s when I realized that there is really goodness in this world,” she said.

Tootsy said that while there were people who chose to stay away from her and her family, there was roughly an equal number that began leaving food at the front of their home.

“I didn’t know who to thank kasi ang daming nagpadala . . . God was in each and every person who helped us,” she said.

In the same reflection, she also credited Pope Francis for his inspiring "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) prayer, highlighting the quote: “You ask us not to be afraid. Yet our faith is weak and we are fearful. But you, Lord, will not leave us at the mercy of the storm.”

“From that day on, I was not afraid,” Tootsy said.

It was just last Monday when it was announced that her senator husband had recovered from COVID-19. He had tested negative for the virus, and was declared pneumonia-free.

The biggest lesson Tootsy learned from the taxing experience was that "we cannot survive without each other."

Mentioning a quote about how people are "angels with only one wing and we can [only] fly by embracing one another," she said that humanity can be saved through generosity, kindness and compassion.
