NEW YORK - Actor Marc Dela Cruz is the first Filipino-American to bring to life one of America’s founding fathers in the title role of Alexander Hamilton on Broadway.

“It’s a thrill, such an honor, it’s such an epic role. It’s such a beautifully written role that has a very complete arc,” he said.

It took him just a little more than a month of rehearsals before taking the stage as Alexander Hamilton, as a show understudy.

“I got to do my first performance as Hamilton, and I since had done it four times…. the role is so rich so it gives me chance to find something new, especially on the stage with this amazing cast and to kind of feel everyone’s energy collectively together. It’s a really powerful show,” he said.

Dancer Karla Garcia is the first Filipina-Americans to join the cast of "Hamilton," and she was there to witness that historic moment.

“I was in tears, not just because of his beautiful craftsmanship as an actor but to see a Filipino play the role of Alexander Hamilton embodies somebody you would never think would be a Filipino,” she said. “The characters in our show are so fluid, and can be played by anybody.”

Dela Cruz also hosts “EduHam,” a history education program at the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, made possible by an initial $1.46 million grant from the Rockefeller Foundation. It started as a project to help 20,000 New York City public school students see the hot ticket musical for only $10 dollars.

Fans can catch Dela Cruz at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Broadway as part of the ensemble playing John Laurens or Philip Schuyler, as well as King George.
