MANILA - After years of being hidden among the belongings of a deceased German pastor, drawings of Jose Rizal were unearthed and are now back in the Philippines, much to the delight of Filipino art and history enthusiasts.

Rizal's sketches were found by Dr. Hans Hack in an album containing the sketches of his grandfather, Karl Ullmer.

Rizal was in Heidelberg, Germany when he started a correspondence with Ullmer, who was a pastor in the town of Wilhelmsfeld.

Ullmer invited Rizal to stay with him and he became a part of Ullmer's family. It was also during this time that Rizal finished his first novel, "Noli Me Tangere."

In 1961, Hans and his brother, Fritz, donated to the Philippine government a rare autographed first edition of "Noli Me Tangere," some letters of Rizal to Ullmer and other documents about the Filipino hero.

The Ullmer collection is now kept in a vault at the National Library.

A few years later, the Hack brothers found a sketchbook among the possessions of their deceased grandfather. It contained about 40 drawings made by Ullmer and two sketches, a portrait of Ullmer and his wife, drawn by Rizal himself.

According to Hans, who inherited the sketchbook, he and his wife decided to offer the sketchbook for auction in the Philippines, where there is a market for it.

PIECES BY JUAN LUNA, BOTONG FRANCISCO

Aside from the rare Rizal drawings, three paintings by Juan Luna, as well as a work by Carlos "Botong" Francisco, will also be auctioned.

Luna's "La Patria en Peligro," which used to be part of Don Ramon J. Fernandez's collection, captures the mood of the French Revolution, while "Scenes of Everyday Life in Japan" depicted Luna's travel to the Asian country.

Francisco's "Camote Diggers" was originally a gift to Tony Kayanan, one of the chief architects of the Ministry of Human Settlements during the Marcos administration.
