Davao City mayoral candidate Sara Duterte, daughter of presidential bet Rodrigo Duterte, on Monday said she is a rape victim but does not take offense at the comments her father made about an Australian missionary who was raped and murdered.

Interviewed after the campaign rally of Team Duterte-Cayetano in Bacolod City, the younger Duterte said the rape took place a long time ago and she did not tell anyone about it, especially her parents.

She did not give details about the incident, saying it's immaterial and did not hinder her development as a person.

Although she admitted that her father's comments may have offended many people, Sara said it would neither define her father's total character nor would it be reflective of his performance and desire to lead the country.

Sara said she came out with the revelation after media and friends sought her reaction regarding her father's rape anecdote.

Duterte, presidential candidate of the PDP-Laban, has come under fire for his remarks over the gang-rape and killing of 36-year-old Jaqueline Hamill, a missionary from Sydney, Australia. Hamill was one of several "prayer warriors" taken hostage by Federico Pugoy and other inmates inside Davao Metrodiscom in 1989.

In a campaign rally on April 12 in Quezon City, the tough-talking mayor described the missionary as very beautiful and likened her to an American actress.

"T***a, sayang ito. Ang napasok sa isip ko, ni-rape nila. Pinagpilahan nila. Nagalit ako kasi ni-rape. Oo, isa rin yun. Napakaganda. Dapat ang mayor muna ang mauna," he said, drawing laughter from his supporters.

Duterte on Sunday said sorry to Filipinos who felt offended by his remarks, but said his statement was not a joke but was made out of sheer anger.

"I am sorry to the Filipino people. It's my style. It's my mouth, I said it in the heat of anger but listen to the story behind. Wag kayong basta pa-ambak ambak iyan," he said.

Sara said she did not know how to defend her father, so she thought of coming out with her experience.

Sara posted on Instagram that she was a rape victim but will still vote her father.

In her caption, she wrote: "Day 14. Finally said it. Good Morning."

It was the first time that Sara joined her father on stage for his campaign rally.

Sara, along with her mother Elizabeth, and other duterte kin are in their Bacolod leg of the "Byaheng Duterte" sortie.

The group is campaigning all over Visayas and Mindanao.
