MANILA - After weeks of anticipation, the Philippine national elections commenced and played out like many expected, based on the surveys.

One by one, the rivals of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte conceded as the frontrunner built an insurmountable lead. In fact, the lead up to the presidential race proved to be more heated and intense than the actual results.

Prior to Monday, Duterte's opponents went into all-out attack mode and threw feisty accusations to dissuade his supporters before they cast their votes. It proved unsuccessful and Duterte, instead of venting his anger, called for unity as he prepares to succeed President Benigno Aquino III.

It was a different story in the vice presidential race, however. After being overtaken, the camp of Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. voiced out allegations of cheating. It did little to calm his supporters, who are now calling for a recount should Liberal Party bet Leni Robredo defeat Marcos.
