R&B royalties Kyla and Jay R share what made them fall in love with the genre in this throwback episode of Gandang Gabi Vice.

Jay R revealed that his parents are also music lovers. His dad is a classical pianist and his mom is a singer, thus he grew up listening to different kinds of songs. But when he got to hear an R&B song at home, he felt instant connection with it.

“N’ung narinig ko ‘yung R&B first time, I was just a kid, I just fell in love with it, ‘yung mga kulot-kulot, mga chords niya… Na-in love ako kasi it’s so simple yet very complicated, eh, kaya I was very intrigued with that style,” said Jay R.

Vice Ganda commented that doing vocal runs and riffs is more of an innate than a learned talent. Kyla would have to agree, “Lumalabas siya. ‘Yun ang masarap sa R&B kasi parang nakakapaglaro ka ‘pag kumakanta ka. Hindi ka lang nagsi-stick doon sa melody.”

Vice further remarked, “Naiiba mo ‘yung version. ‘Di ba ‘yung R&B artists ‘pag kumakanta sila, kada kanta nila, iba nang iba ‘yung version?”
