Nikkei, the brainchild of couple Jackie and Carlo Lorenzana (of Argentinian steakhouse La Cabrera), has been delighting foodies with a fresh take on Japanese-Peruvian cuisine since 2015.

Nikkei cuisine has gained popularity worldwide for its delicious and innovative dishes that showcase the best of both culinary worlds.


Aside from Nikkei the restaurant, they’ve come up with two subconcepts under the same brand: Nikkei Nama Bar, which features a ‘playful take on Nikkei cuisine’; and Nikkei Robata, which celebrates the age-old tradition of Japanese grilling style called Robatayaki. And this month, Nikkei opened its newest Robata branch at Greenbelt 3 where it's all about letting the exceptional ingredients and the captivating fusion of Japanese-Peruvian flavors do the talking.

At the Greenbelt branch’s opening day, we got a preview of the new items on the Nikkei menu: cocktail-perfect Yuzu Prawns (crispy prawns coated in tangy and creamy yuzu-rocoto mayo, topped with tobiko, negi, lime, togarashi, and kizame yuzu), smoky Grilled Tako (glazed octopus with panka and tare sauce, topped with leeks, egg tare, togarashi, and a splash lime), robata-grilled Shishito Pepper with sea salt, and Pescado Frito (crispy fried Alaskan pollock with saltado vegetables, egg, fried onions, gohan, cilantro, and miso aioli). These items are also available in other Nikkei locations.

But what makes the visit to the Greenbelt branch worth it are the exclusive items on its menu.


The Hotate Aburi NigiriTorched Hokkaido scallops are fresh, sweet, and silky smooth—topped with chalaquita (Peruvian chopped relish or salad made from a medley of peppers, onions, and cilantro), lemon, and Nikkei’s teriyaki sauce.


The Grilled Salmon Belly with Mushroom Risottois a robata-grilled salmon belly with just the right amount of char on the outside and still beautifully pink inside. The risotto is smooth and flavorful, thanks to the huancaina sauce and Parmesan. This risotto was studded with shiitake, shimeji and enoki mushrooms, and asparagus.

The Black Cod with Spicy Shiso Ponzu is proof that indeed simplicity makes the biggest impact. This piece of charcoal-grilled Indonesian black cod is wonderfully flakey yet still moist. It’s topped with chopped red onions, chili, cilantro, and shiso leaves with red wine vinegar, sesame oil, and lemon to add even more freshness to the dish. If you’re looking for something more filling, get the Black Cod Bowl, which serves honey-miso Indonesian black cod on top of gohan (Japanese rice) with poached egg, cilantro salad, fried onions, lemon, and nuts.

Other Greenbelt exclusives are the Hokkaido Scallops with Uni Sauce (seared japanese scallops, sushi rice, and sesame seeds), Robata Steak (robata-grilled steak served with truffled mashed potato and chalaquita), Hamachi Kama (robata-grilled hamachi collar tare sauce cilantro salad), and Kushiyaki Pork Belly (kurubota pork belly marinated in honey miso and hoisin, robata-grilled with tare sauce). If you order the Kushiyaki Platter, you’ll get the pork belly with ika (squid), ebi, tamago (skewered pieces of tamagoyaki cubes with caramelized sugar on top), and boiled quail eggs.

Nikkei Robata Greenbelt introduces an even fresher dimension to the dining experience with its premium sake offerings, meticulously chosen and provided by Sakagura, a sake bar under the same company. So make sure to enjoy Nikkei’s signature cocktails like Sake Sangria (Havana Club 3 years, sake, lychee syrup, orange juice, apple juice, ginger syrup) and Ruby Sake Soda (Beefeater Gin, sake, ruby red grapefruit juice, lemongrass, ginger, soda water). For a limited time, diners can enjoy three cocktails for only P595+ during happy hour (2 pm to 6 pm daily) and get ‘buy one, take one’ offers on Japanese draft beers until supplies last. We highly recommend the Yuzu Gin Fizz (Beefeater Gin, yuzu, Aperol, raspberry jam, simple syrup) and Strawberry Margarita (Volcan Blanco tequila, cointreau, strawberry puree, lime juice, simple syrup).
