On the tiny teardrop-shaped island of Siargao, a brave venture has taken root. Maison Bukana Wines is a new wine label that ambitiously blends Filipino warmth with French sophistication. It's born from the labor of love and shared passions of award-winning Filipino singer and actress Nadine Lustre and French-Filipino businessman Chris Bariou. And one balmy evening in late October, we had the opportunity to sit down with them to delve into the the story behind this exciting endeavor.

Chris and Nadine’s journey to create Maison Bukana Wines is a story of friendship, a shared love for wine, and the fusion of Filipino and French traditions. As Nadine noted, 'It was actually Chris’s friend, who’s obviously now my friend as well, who came up to us and had this good idea to produce our own brand of wine.' The proposal aligned seamlessly with their growing passion for wine and their frequent visits to France which, inevitably, led to more explorations of vino.

They chose to name their wine label after Chris's resort in Siargao, Maison Bukana, to emphasize the connection between the two brands. As Nadine explained, 'Maison Bukana is pretty much merging two different worlds, which is what Chris’s identity is. Bringing [together] the best of two worlds, which is Filipino and French traditions, like being married to create something that’s new and beautiful.'

The portfolio currently holds three wines, each carefully tailored to suit Filipino preferences. 'Pretty much everything is adjusted to the Filipino palate,' says Chris. For example, the wines were created with an eye to the Filipino love for rich, savory flavors.

Les Beaux Jours is a refreshing rosé made from Cabernet Franc grapes. Harmoniously balanced with a bouquet of fresh berries and delicate floral notes, you get discernible hints of strawberries and raspberries amid nuances of citrus. This wine is ideal for warm tropical weather, and makes an excellent aperitif. “This rosé would be more, in France, in the summer vibe,” notes Chris.

Verdange d’Ete is a velvety merlot with a luscious harmony of black cherries and plum, complemented by subtle herbal and earthy notes. This is a refined wine, versatile and elegant, with soft tannins and a lingering finish. The perfect wine to pair with any type of food, says Chris.

All the wines are made with Bordeaux-grown grapes, are vegan-friendly, and certified Haute Valeur Environmentale (High Environmental Value). They pair excellently with food.

Chris and Nadine each have their own particular favorite. 'I’m very biased for the rosé and the white just because I appreciate them more,' says Nadine. Chris prefers the rosé and thinks Filipinos will love it as the kind of wine that embodies the spirit of sunny, warm Philippines.
