After bringing us along on the journey of her character, Nadia—an overseas Filipina worker who fell victim to a transnational human trafficking scheme—from the Middle East to Myanmar, where she was employed to become a scammer at an illegal online scamming hub in the first part of Maalaala Mo Kaya’s “Trafficked Story” entitled “SIM Card,” talented Kapamilya actress Bela Padilla was back in its second part to narrate the unimaginable horror that Nadia had to endure for 48 days while inside the dreaded Titan Park.

The MMK “Trafficked Story” Part 2 (MMK “Bintana”) commenced on Nadia’s fifth day at her cell inside the complex when, instead of being given water and food for her sustenance, she was assaulted by two of the three Chinese guards who swung by. It was after she uttered that she was currently in Myanmar instead of Thailand when asked by a middle-aged man regarding her location. One of them, played by David Chua, defended her from being hit further.

As she already ran out of food and water on Day 10, Nadia was left forced to drink the murky water from the tap just to suffice her thirst. She then found a glimmer of hope in the cleaner who was doing her rounds that day, as it agreed to buy food and water for her in exchange for money.

On her 21st day, the guards brought into her cell a middle-aged Chinese woman, who was initially hostile towards her. In spite of the woman’s demeanor, Nadia remained kind to her by talking to her politely and giving her the only piece of bread and bottled water that she had. Despite their language barrier, since the woman couldn’t speak or understand English, they were still able to find a way to converse with each other via sign language, learning that both of them were actually mothers.

Two days later, the woman attempted to escape by grabbing the moment that the cleaner opened the door of their cell and assaulting her until she was able to get out. Nadia was apparently hesitant about whether she would run out as well or not, but the guards were quick to catch them and beat them all up. When she regained consciousness, she found herself alone in her cell, without any trace of the Chinese woman.

The guard, whom she initially thought was kindhearted, suddenly went inside her cell, which made her and the audience probably assume just wanted to check on her. However, instead of doing so and responding to her question with regard to what happened to her cellmate, the man attempted to sexually assault her, which was foiled after Nadia was able to ward him off and one of his fellow guards was able to catch him.

On Day 37, the said guard tried to lure her to escape by keeping the door of her cell ajar. But she took a step back upon seeing the long samurai sword that he was holding, which he apparently used to decapitate the woman detained in the room adjacent to hers. Nadia saw the unknown woman’s head and body being dragged along the corridor, which further traumatized her.

A week later, what was supposed to be a festive and jovial Chinese New Year celebration went on to become one of the most tormenting days in her life. The guard didn’t just physically hurt her that night, but he also molested her, which triggered her hallucinations the following day. As she seemed to have already considered taking her own life after all the suffering that she had gone through, Nadia saw her son in her imagination, pleading with her not to push through with whatever she was mulling over doing in that moment and encouraging her to keep clinging to hope.

This prompted her to lament the number of times that she had put her hopes up only to be betrayed and disappointed and later on realized that what she was initially planning to do was actually a huge mistake. She whisked away the idea and chose to keep on hoping that the day would come when she could finally go home and be with her family again.

And that day indeed came as she woke up to the sounds of the blaring sirens on Day 48, with Thai soldiers raiding Titan Park to rescue all victims of human trafficking held as captives there and to arrest everyone involved in running the establishment at the same time. Nadia and her fellow rescues were brought to a center where she got to meet other Filipinos illegally recruited in scam hubs and hear their agonizing stories. The group also included a couple and a woman who shared that they were supposed to just have their vacations in Thailand only to find out that they were fooled and were forced to work as scammers.

As promised by the Philippine Embassy, she and the other Pinoys were able to come home after quite some time. Still severely traumatized by her experiences there, Nadia still found herself haunted by the eerie vibe of her cell and frightened to face other people, except her mom (Mickey Ferriols), who had been there to check on and watch over her.

Eventually, Nadia had finally mustered the courage to reach out to her ex-boyfriend Yadid, whom her mother said consistently contacted them during the time that she was in Myanmar. However, Nadia wasn’t ready yet to revive their romance and asked for more time from him, which prompted Yadid to confess that he was already seeing another woman. The call—as well as their relationship—ended with the both of them wishing one another happiness and Nadia thanking Yadid for everything that he had done for her.

Nadia had also found the confidence to face her children later on and gave them kisses and embraces during their very emotional reunion.

At present, Nadia related that she’s still in the process of rebuilding herself, with her children being her real source of strength. She firmly believes that through their help, she will eventually heal from that dark and horrendous chapter in her life. It may not be easy for her to share her story, but she hopes that it will serve as a lesson not just for OFWs but also for everyone since it can definitely happen to anyone.

Takeaways from and feedbacks on the episode

Just like what she did in the first part of the MMK “Trafficked Story,” Bela Padilla once again delivered a gripping performance in the second part—from the way she conveyed the emotions felt by Nadia up to her physical appearance. All the sacrifices she had made for this episode, which she related in her exclusive interview with Kapamilya Chat, indeed paid off.

We really felt the pain and suffering that Nadia had endured, as well as the trauma and hallucinations that she had developed because of those atrocious experiences at the Titan Park. Besides, viewers probably couldn’t help but feel sorry for her when she was still reeling from that dark phase in the life of Nadia, as well as going through its aftermath, which eventually took a toll on her relationships with her loved ones.

Aside from Bela, the supporting cast members did impressive portrayals of their respective roles as well, making sure that their limited exposures would make a mark and would be worth the time.

The staff and crew of RCD Narratives, which include Director Raz Dela Torre and episode writer Akeem Datol del Rosario, deserve to be commended, too, for mounting this another remarkable “MMK” episode.

While Nadia already amazed us with her strength in still choosing to be away from her children to work abroad even though it was so hard for a mother like her to do so in the first part, she further astounded us with the different level of strength and courage that she displayed in facing the challenges inside the scam hub, particularly the Titan Park. She may have lost her mind at some point in her stay, yet she was still able to conquer the negativities surrounding her and running around in her mind by choosing to hold on to hope.

May Nadia’s story serve both as a reminder and inspiration for everyone of us. A reminder for us to be really cautious in taking on the opportunities that come our way and to trust the process of our healing because it will definitely take time to move on from traumatic experiences, mend wounds, and ease the pain. Besides, it’s also never wrong or a sign of weakness to seek help from other people during our healing process.
