While some girls are able to develop and maintain wonderful bonds with their fathers growing up, it’s apparently not the case for Gab Rivera, the feisty character portrayed by Maris Racal in the well-liked action-drama series “Incognito,” and her dad, Samuel, played by award-winning actor Joel Torre. 

Based on their several scenes together, which some we collated in this Kapamilya Update feature, the two obviously have an enduring “beef” or severe misunderstanding, which has caused Gab to grow hostile towards Samuel. In one of their confrontations in the earlier parts of the series, we had witnessed their fiery clash wherein Gab wasn’t able to contain her exasperation upon realizing that Samuel actually hired men to track her down, to which he replied that he just wanted nothing but the best life for her. 

The mellifluous tone of her Hiligaynon accent also failed to conceal her rage against Samuel for tarnishing her reputation at work, which subsequently led to her dismissal from military service. Samuel may have explained that it was not the kind of life that he had envisioned for her, but rather than getting touched, Gab angrily declared that she was already disowning herself from their family, and Samuel, of course, would never allow that to happen.

Aware of her dad’s delinquencies, Gab was certain that he had a hand in the sudden disappearances of sabungeros, or cockfight enthusiasts, whom the authorities were searching for. Thus, she confronted him about it, which Samuel denied and said that he was actually looking for them, too. He strongly insisted that even though he runs an illegal gambling business, he would never ever dare to kill anyone, to which she gave him the benefit of the doubt. 

As Gab blamed his ventures for destroying the lives of many people and families, Samuel reminded her that it’s the business that fed through the years and called her ungrateful or “walang utang na loob.” This made her wish to have already died as well, like what happened to her late mom, and to not endure having him as her remaining parent, which indeed upset him and prompted him to shoo her away.

Gab’s rage against Samuel further escalated when she chanced upon Samuel’s girlfriend, Shari (Emmanuelle Vera), in one of her visits at their house. As her unica hija hurled insults at his lover, Samuel couldn’t help but be mad at her, which resulted in another bout of altercation between them. 

She also got dismayed upon learning about Samuel’s plan to sell their rest house, where her mom used to stay when she was still alive. According to him, he and Shari both thought that it was indeed a waste to leave it abandoned, so they came up with the idea of selling it in order to buy a better property. Of course, Gab highly objected to it and offered to buy it, which both Samuel and Shari apparently find absurd. She insisted that she could do it; they only have to wait.

Although she often appears fierce and gutsy, Gab definitely cannot deny that she still has a soft spot, especially towards Samuel. They may always fight with each other, yet her love and concern for him have remained, which she demonstrated by advising him to break up with Shari since she feels that the woman is just only after his wealth and she’s not genuinely in love with him. As Samuel told her that they’re both important and dear to him, so he refused to choose between them, Gab asserted that she would never love him.
