Not many may remember, but Regine Velasquez was actually part of “ASAP” during its early years, back in 1995, when she’d often be invited as a guest performer. She was there when the show was still broadcast from the iconic Delta Theater before moving to ABS-CBN’s studio.

Regine can confidently say “ASAP” was a game-changer in the world of live performances. Before it came along, singers were often encouraged to lip-sync since studios didn’t have the best sound systems. But "ASAP" was built different, with its live band and real-time performances. That’s why when showbiz veterans say "ASAP" was a true litmus test for artists, where only the best of the best could step up, it's true. Artists had to be able to really sing or perform when they hit that stage.

Regine officially became a mainstay in 2018, and she’s loving it more than ever. Not just the on-stage performances, but the off-cam moments too. "Kahit ‘yung mga small talks, I love that," she shared in an episode of Kapamilya Chat, adding that she enjoys hanging out in the production area where there’s always a big table full of food. "Lahat kami tumatambay doon."

Another thing she loves most about "ASAP" is working with colleagues she considers among her oldest and most solid friends, as well as the new-gen artists she’s excited to get to know. And of course, it's extra fun because she gets to work with her husband, Ogie Alcasid, on Sundays.

"'Yung mga ganitong shows, hindi mo naman mahe-help na maging close ka sa mga taong katrabaho mo kasi 'yun ang dynamic talaga, eh," she noted. "Ako, I try to get to know everyone, even the staff, the crew." The Asia's Songbird recalled that, during her first few years, the staff would panic whenever she’d go to the production area, thinking she was in a rush to perform. So she would explain that she was just there to bond with everyone.

"It’s easier to work with people when you know them," she said. "Our goal is to be here for a long time. How can you stay here for a long time if you don’t know anyone?" These are the people who make their lives as performers easier, so it’s only right to get to know them.

Another fulfilling part of being on "ASAP" is witnessing the rise of new OPM acts. "Ang daming mas magaling na ngayon," she gushed, impressed by the style of younger artists. Regine is very supportive of these rising stars, knowing they’ll continue OPM’s legacy. When asked about potential collaborations with younger singers, she mentioned that she’s been planning to perform with Morissette Amon, Klarisse de Guzman, Jona, Angeline Quinto, and Kyla but scheduling conflicts have kept it from happening. She hopes it will come together soon.

Speaking of concerts, Regine’s ability to always sell out her shows never fades. She’s grateful that even now, there are still people who support her and truly make her feel the love. She finds it heartwarming that at her latest meet and greet event, fans had their own little gimmicks to celebrate her. "Yung pagpunta nila sa concert, more than enough na 'yun, eh. Pero ‘yung pupunta ka sa meet and greet tapos may dala kang gift, I cannot thank them enough." Though she’s not sure she deserves it, she’s thankful beyond words.

With almost 40 years in the industry, Regine’s career has been phenomenal. She's even more grateful for her singing career because it’s opened doors for her other dreams. Through music, Regine was able to send her siblings to school, which is she something considers her greatest achievement. "Kasi personal 'yun sa akin. Not that doing a concert is not personal, but ‘yun ang nakikita ko na achievement ko talaga," she reflected. "Iba ‘yung achievement mo sa totoong buhay. Ano ba ‘yung kina-count mo na blessing? Of course it's a big blessing na binigyan ako ng boses na ganito, ng career na ganito. Pero mas malaking blessing sa akin ‘yung binigyan ako ng magulang na sobrang naging supportive sa akin sa career ko."

Thanks to the entertainment industry, Regine’s dream of becoming a mother and wife also came true. It was through showbiz that she met her husband, Ogie. She loves being a wife to him, and a mother to their son, Nate. Lately, Nate has been showing his potential in singing through videos Regine posts on social media. When asked if this is a sign that Nate will follow in his parents’ footsteps, Regine admitted she’s not sure. Personally, she wouldn’t want Nate to enter showbiz because she knows the pressure it could bring, especially with people constantly comparing him to his iconic parents. "I don’t want him to feel that as a young kid," she explained.

At first, Nate’s interests leaned toward academics. He loves reading and researching. But it’s hard to deny that performing is in his DNA because, little by little, he’s exploring that world. Regine was surprised when Nate recently decided to audition for a musical play as part of the ensemble. That’s when she realized that if Nate truly wants to be part of the entertainment industry, she can’t stop him. She’d support him and guide him with all the knowledge she has.

"I’m sure I will be a stage mom," she said.

The celebration of “ASAP”’s 30th anniversary continues, so tune in for exciting homecoming surprises and more spectacular performances every Sunday at noon on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live (KOL), TV5, and A2Z.
