“Forgive and forget.”

We’ve probably encountered this oft-quoted idiom a lot of times since, at some points in our lives, we have certainly experienced forgiven and being forgiven. Saying it may be easy, but we all know how difficult it is to forgive the person who’s done us wrong and to forget what they have done, especially if the offense committed is something that is truly difficult to move on from.

Thus, forgiveness is considered a crucial skill to learn since it’s not as simple as acknowledging one’s transgression and apologizing for it, but it also entails reconciliation among the parties involved, rectification of wrongdoings, and restoration of trust and connection.

With how this act can capture the authentic personalities and relatable emotions of any individual going through this process, forgiveness has been one of the powerful themes explored in series and movies. As we seek forgiveness for our transgressions, as well as redemption, this Holy Week, let us delve into the five poignant scenes from recent Kapamilya teleseryes that explored the art of letting go and finding healing through this feature.

Ramon will do anything for Marites' forgiveness, FPJ's Batang Quiapo

It’s indeed difficult to pardon someone whose despicable acts in the past have never ceased to haunt us for the rest of our lives, as well as have taken a toll on our relationships. And this is precisely what has happened to Marites (Cherry Pie Picache), whose life started to become miserable after she was sexually assaulted by Ramon (Christopher de Leon) decades ago in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.”

Knowing the gravity of what he had done, Ramon was eager to do everything that he could just to gain the forgiveness of Marites and to make it up to her. She might have told him that she was not keen on giving it to him right away, but he told her that he’s willing to wait for her, even though it would take forever. And now, Ramon has already earned it, as he’s been Marites’ shoulder to cry on and knight in shining armor.

Bingo forgives Annie and calls her “Nay” again, Can’t Buy Me Love

Imagine having to fend for yourself at a young age after your mom left you in the custody of your drunkard dad without any clue on where you can find her. Well, that’s the story of Bingo (Donny Pangilinan), who was raised by his foster grandma, Lola Nene (Nova Villa), and her son, Monching (Ketchup Eusebio), after his father died.

With everything that he went through in life, Bingo wasn’t able to hold his pent-up emotions and lashed out at Annie (Ina Raymundo) when they got reunited and had the chance to talk again. Despite the pain that she had inflicted on him, Bingo was still able to find it in his heart to forgive her, give her a warm embrace, and even call her “Nay” again—much to her happiness.

Tyrone expressed regret for what he did to Iris, Lavender Fields

Instead of being delighted and excited, “Lavender Fields”’s Iris (Janine Gutierrez) was so furious to see her husband, Tyrone (Jericho Rosales), again after several years of not seeing each other and making everyone believe that he’s already dead. She welcomed her not with sweet kisses andaffectionate words but with her little golden gun and seething rage as she expressed how much she hated him and wanted him dead.

However, even though he’d betrayed her and broken her heart multiple times, Iris, apparently, would always be a soft spot for Tyrone, as she still chose to forgive him despite what he had done. As he challenged her to shoot him, Iris didn’t, and she surrendered to his embrace.

Juliana begs Victor for forgiveness, Linlang

There’s an oft-quoted Filipino adage that says, “Nasa huliang pagsisisi,” and this completely applies to Juliana (Kim Chiu), who was so remorseful for choosing to cheat on him even though he genuinely loved her and gave his everything to their marriage before. She also regretted thinking that his brother, Alex (JM de Guzman), was much better than him, only to find out in the end that she made the wrong decision.

Thus, although Victor had already forgiven her, Juliana still believed that she deserved to be hurt and beaten up by Alex for everything that she did to him and put him into. She went down to her knees and cried to show how sorry she was and how regretful she was for not believing that they could fix everything between them and for not being strong enough to fight for their relationship. Juliana apologized to him as well for not telling the truth about what really happened when Sylvia, fearing that Alex would take their daughter, Abby (Heart Ramos), away from her.

Anna musters the courage to ask for forgiveness from Julius, Saving Grace: The Untold Story

Years after she broke up with him and left him without saying the real reason why, “Saving Grace”’s Anna (Julia Montes) finally mustered the courage to ask Julius (Sam Milby), who was revealed to be her former fiancé, to forgive her for hurting him. She told him that she was just so confused and selfish back then for not telling her what she was going through and why she ended their relationship.

She might have grown to be unremorseful for what she had done, but Grace (Zia Grace) has taught her to apologize to people that she hurt. It might have superbly upset and broken the heart of Julius, yet he still opted to forgive her.
