Every year, it has been a tradition among Christians all over the world to take part in various religious activities and do personal devotions during Holy Week—the most sacred and important period of the year when we commemorate the heart-rending journey of Jesus Christ to the cross and His eventual resurrection.

Thus, as we do some contemplation during these days of respite and reflection, we may probably get more inspired to do minimal to drastic changes in our lives, with regard particularly to our personalities. As we, perhaps, go through some sort of introspection and transformation this Holy Week, here are five riveting character developments in some of our well-loved Kapamilya teleseryes.

Juliana, Linlang

It is said that before we become capable of loving another person, we must also learn to genuinely love and completely build ourselves first. And this was the lesson that Juliana, compellingly portrayed by Kim Chiu in “Linlang,” learned the very hard way.

As she got distraught over the alleged flirting of her ex-husband Victor (Paulo Avelino) with other girls, which was worsened by the death of their firstborn and his departure thereafter, Juliana clung to his half-brother Alex (JM de Guzman), with whom she had an illicit affair with. Just when she thought that she already attained the life she’d ever dreamt off, fate had proven her wrong as Alex abused and cheated on her.

That’s when Juliana realized that she made the wrong judgments and decisions, which she was able to rectify by apologizing to her family, owning up to her mistakes, and forgiving and loving herself in the latter part of the story.

Elias, Pamilya Sagrado

Even though he’s already a full-grown adult who is capable of making decisions on his own, Elias Sagrado, astoundingly depicted by esteemed actor John Arcilla in “Pamilya Sagrado,” still allowed himself to be influenced by his brother and their wicked patriarch, Jaime (Tirso Cruz III). Thus, he became corrupt, immoral, and ruthless like him, as well as his nephew Rafael (Piolo Pascual) and his grandson Justin (Grae Fernandez).

As he realized the crimes of his family and decided that he didn’t want to get involved, Elias eventually had a change of heart and went against Jaime. Apart from not heeding his orders, Elias also became a beacon of hope for Moises (Kyle Echarri), who sought his help as the other Sagrados pressed charges against him for the crimes that he didn’t commit. He vowed to help him, for which Moises was very thankful, as well as her unica hija, Danica (Micaela Santos).

Tanggol, Batang Quiapo

From being a notorious thief plying the streets of Quiapo along with his friends who robbed other people of their belongings and hard-earned money, Tanggol (Coco Martin) has gone on to become the person who gives away money to the less privileged. One perfect demonstration of it was when Tanggol helped Katherine (Ara Davao) by toppling down the snatcher that took away her wallet while she wandered around Quiapo for the first time and returning it to her.

Besides, now that he already has the wealth and power, he hopes to inspire and be able to help the underprivileged to live brand-new lives. Tanggol may still get arrogant and aggressive sometimes, but his character development is truly impressive, right?

Anna, 100 Days To Heaven

Due to her troubled past, Anna (Xyriel Manabat/Coney Reyes) grew up to be mean, selfish, obnoxious, and greedy. Thus, many people abhorred her, including the wife of his most trusted employee, who orchestrated the car explosion that killed her.

As she was about to be condemned to hell, she bargained with the Tagabantay (Noel Trinidad), or gatekeeper, to give her a second chance to live, correct mistakes, and make amends with those people she wronged. Tagabantay agreed but with an epic twist: she had to do it for 100 days and as a child.

Throughout her journey of accomplishing her mission, Anna learned the lessons and values that she failed to realize when she was still alive. She became kinder and friendlier, as well as more cheerful and more appreciative of the little joys in life—just like how children usually are.

Joy, Huwag Kang Mangamba

With everything bad that happened in her life, Joy (Francine Diaz) harbored hatred towards God as she blamed Him for all her misfortunes. But her perception of Him eventually changed as she got to know

Him personally and realized how good He had been to her all along through her friend, Mira (Andrea Brillantes), who was later on revealed to be her long-lost sister.

As Mira made her see her worth and innate beauty, as well as made her feel the genuine love and care she’d been yearning for, Joy apologized to Jesus, whom she and Mira fondly called “Bro,” as she already realized that He had meaningful reasons for making things happen in her life. And His apparition to her further encouraged her to change.

These teleserye characters indeed prove that we don’t have to wait for the Holy Week to come for us to transform ourselves for the better since we can do it whenever we feel that we’re ready and committed to doing it. Furthermore, going through character development doesn’t have to be drastic since it is a long process that requires patience, discipline, mindfulness, and dedication.
