Just as Tanggol (Coco Martin) stepped into his new world as a Montenegro, the audience was also pulled into immersive scenes that felt just as transformative, especially for those who have followed his journey since day one.

The recent episodes of “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” featured an opulent, all-black party hosted by the Montenegro family to formally introduce Tanggol to their allies, including the influential Guerrero clan. It was a pivotal moment wrapped in striking visuals; you could practically feel the weight of power and danger in the air. Everything exuded the dark allure of Manila’s hidden mafia world.

From concept to execution, every detail was meticulously crafted to transport viewers into this shadowy new realm. Let’s break down the creative process behind bringing this cinematic moment to life.

Unit director Darnel Villaflor shared that they wanted the gathering to feel more than just an ordinary party. It had to feel like a ‘coronation’ for the Montenegro heir. "Para makita agad ni Tanggol kung gaano kalaki ‘yung  papasukin niyang mundo at kung gaano karami yung mga tao na nag-e-expect sa kanya na maging tagapagmana ng Montenegro family," Direk Dan discussed.

The goal was for Tanggol, and the audience, to immediately grasp the magnitude of the world he was stepping into and the powerful figures expecting him to carry on the Montenegro legacy, hence, their visual choices leaned into black and shadowy aesthetic that would reflect the dark nature of this 'secret society.'

Finding the perfect location was another crucial piece of the puzzle. The team needed a setting that would set the clandestine, underground feel. With that vision, they went for a basement-like venue.

Given the scale and significance of this sequence, the team departed from their usual free-flowing, no-script approach. Unlike past scenes where spontaneity played a key role, this time, everything was carefully mapped out in the script beforehand. Coco typically makes adjustments on set, but the changes for this particular scene were kept to a minimum to maintain cohesion.

Another challenge was making sure the powerhouse cast looked and felt like a unified force. Direk Darnel pointed out that working with a mix of veteran, senior, and young actors meant dealing with different acting styles and personalities.  "'Yung mix nila na 'pag pinagsama-sama mo, iba't ibang temperament 'yan. Ang preparation na gagawin mo diyan is really to be able to get their attention and to be able to squeeze out 'yung eksena na gusto mong lumabas. Napakahalaga na alam nila 'yung gagawin nila," he said.

Luckily, the brilliance of “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo”’s ensemble cast made the process smoother. "Dahil magagaling ang artista sa 'Batang Quiapo,' once naibigay mo na 'yung instruction, nagfe-free flow na 'yung acting nila at nadadagdagan pa 'yung eksena dahil sa skill at experience nila in acting,” Direk Dan continued.

Unit director Richard Somes echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how every movement mattered in a scene of this scale. He admitted that working with some of the brightest stars in the business pushed him to step up his game, but at the same time, he saw it as an honor.

Coco felt the same way. Even with his years of experience, he was still in awe of how they managed to bring together an all-star cast in one sequence. He was admittedly nervous, especially since it was the first time they were all acting together. "Hindi naman lahat ng projects talaga ganito karami ang artista, ganito kagagaling na mga artista ang makaksama mo," he shared.

Despite the pressure, Coco is beyond grateful for the entire team’s efforts in making “FPJ's Batang Quiapo” the best it can be. And it’s not just the production team feeling the weight of this grand sequence as the new cast members are just as hyped about it.

Angel Aquino described the experience as "awesome and daunting at the same time." She shared that the newcomers feel a bit of pressure to catch up with the already well-established dynamics of the ‘Batang Quiapo’ family.  "The ones who have been with ‘Batang Quiapo,’ alam na nila, hawak na hawak na nila 'yung characters nila. Kami, kailangan naming sabayan 'yung confidence nila with how they're doing their scenes,” she said, "Masaya siya pero kailangan ka din always on your toes."

Even luminaries like Chanda Romero and Celia Rodriguez found it surreal to finally be on the set of the country’s top-rating teleserye. Angel, Chanda, and Celia play the formidable women of the Guerrero clan.

Meanwhile, the young Guerrero, Miguelito (Jake Cuenca), immediately clashed with Tanggol after a heated encounter with Tanggol’s crew, which, of course, led to Tanggol stepping in to defend them. After filming the scene, Jake was still riding the adrenaline rush and could only describe the whole experience as nothing short of intense.

For Paolo Paraiso and Roshon Barman, who play Miguelito’s henchmen, the excitement was just as real. They couldn’t believe they were finally facing off with Tanggol’s squad. As a newcomer, Roshon is especially grateful for the support and guidance from everyone on set.

Don’t miss the beginning of Tanggol’s new journey as a Montenegro in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” weeknights on Kapamilya Channel, Kapamilya Online Live (KOL), TV5, and A2Z.
