Is it really okay to be friends with the person who has previously offended you?

This seems to be the question that currently divides avid viewers of “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” because although some find the intimacy between Marites (Cherry Pie Picache) and Ramon (Christopher de Leon) endearing and even hope that they will be each other's future, others seem unhappy with it considering the events of the past.

But regardless of your stand on this matter, we cannot discount the fact that the sincerity and thoughtfulness Ramon has been showing Marites is incredibly impressive and admirable. Thus, it is really impossible to not be thrilled about their secret rendezvous. Let’s look back on five of their most recent heartwarming moments in the series via this edition of Friday 5.

Ever since their paths coincidentally intertwined once again years after their unpleasant encounter in Quiapo that led to a series of unfortunate events for Marites, Ramon has seen it as an opportunity to make it up to her by doing everything he thinks could help her, such as paying for her hospital bills and sending her gifts. However, out of all the efforts that he had done for her, we can all agree that his presence is the most valuable thing that he has ever given her because he has become his “one call away” friend. 

As she faced another terrible problem after Lena (Mercedes Cabral), the mistress of her husband Rigor (John Estrada), got into a critical accident and she couldn’t take it anymore, it was Ramon whom Marites initially reached out to and she didn’t fail. Without any hesitation, Ramon came to her location to give her the consolation that she needed at the time—like a true knight-in-shining-armor.

He brought her to a church where they also had the chance to talk about their child “Tanggol” and their relationship as co-parents and friends. While she was unsure whether to pursue the kind of connection they have at present or not and accept his offer for her to live with him and their son, Ramon expressed his willingness to wait for her until she’s ready and to continue being there for her whenever she would need him.

As Marites thought it was absurd that she had found solace and companionship in the person she used to dreadfully despise, Ramon told her, “Kung may magagawa akong mabuti sa mundong ito, sana ito na ‘yon—makabawi sa anak natin at sa’yo.” He offered to send her home, but Marites told him to not bother anymore since his presence was already enough for her.

Just when we thought that their meeting would end with them simply exchanging goodbyes, we were indeed shocked as they suddenly figured in an intense shootout that left Ramon with a gunshot wound. Like what she did before, Marites refused to abandon him to treat his wounds, which Ramon truly appreciated. They had the chance to continue their intimate conversation and ended the night with a delicate kiss which was made even more beautiful and more romantic by the city lights in the background.
