In this special Holy Week feature, we are going to revisit five confession scenes from recent Kapamilya teleseryes, which stood out among the rest because of how satisfying and/or heartbreaking the confessions are and how commendable the performances of the actors are, too.

These may not have provided the characters absolution, but these confessions made the confessors feel lighter as they finally unloaded a very heavy and huge burden within them and, at the same time, diminished the doubts, confusions, and questions of recipients, letting everyone start afresh and move forward in life.

Marites tells the Tanggol the truth about his real father, FPJ’s Batang Quiapo

After more than two decades of being oblivious about his real paternity and suffering at the hands of the man whom he loved and respected as their family’s “padre de pamilya,” “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo” main hero Tanggol (Coco Martin), along with his friends and their neighbors in Sandimas, finally found out straight from his mother, Marites (Cherry Pie Picache), that Rigor (John Estrada) is not his real father but the infamous Ramon Montenegro (Christopher de Leon).

Apart from the identity of his real dad, Marites also exposed another harrowing detail about Tanggol’s past—that Ramon took advantage of her, which got her pregnant to him and resulted with Rigor resenting her. However, Tanggol still didn’t see it as a valid reason for Ramon to make him suffer growing up.

Bettina expresses her grudge against her family, Can’t Buy Me Love

Many eldest daughters in an Asian household out there can definitely relate to Bettina Tiu, the character impressively portrayed by Kaila Estrada in “Can’t Buy Me Love,” especially with how she felt unloved and unimportant despite everything that she had done for their family. Apparently, she’d been carrying this lifelong grudge within her, which she was able to finally express when their whole family was present in their attempt to save Caroline (Belle Mariano), a.k.a. their dad’s favorite daughter, as she took her hostage.

She conveyed her bitterness against each one of them, but what probably shattered our hearts the most was her response to her dad, who apologized for not being a good father to her and for forgetting about her sometimes. He assumed that she didn’t need him anymore since he perceived her as “the most responsible, the strongest, and the most independent among your siblings,” which she strongly refuted.

“I’m not strong. But I tried to because I had to. I have no one else,” Bettina uttered in between tears and went on to confess all her ill feelings against each of her siblings and her parents. She felt bad that instead of being there for her when she went through a tough time in her life, her family pushed her away and sent her to the United States.

Lily discloses the truth to Camilla via video confession, Lavender Fields

Just when Lily (Jolina Magdangal) thought that she and her late husband, Lance (Biboy Ramirez), could hide the real identity of their beloved unica hija, Camilla (Janell Gonzaga), from her for the rest of their lives, the time has come for them to finally reveal the truth in “Lavender Fields.” While she initially disproved Lance’s confession that Camilla was able to watch, Lily went on to record herself telling the

little girl that her biological mom is none other than Jasmin (Jodi Sta. Maria), whom she fondly calls “Tita Lav.”

With tears in her eyes, Lily told Camilla, “Sigurado ako na ‘yong love na binibigay sa’yo ni Mommy, ibibigay niya sa’yo nang gano’n din. At katulad ko rin, she will protect you. Kahit anong mangyari, gagawin niya ang lahat to protect you. Mahal na mahal kita. Mahal na mahal.”

Antonio admits to Helena the true identity of Anna, Saving Grace: The Untold Story

Prior to his untimely demise during their family boat ride, Antonio (Gardo Versoza) had a heated discussion with his wife, Helena (Janice de Belen), after he confessed that their adoptive daughter, Anna (Hannah Vito/Julia Montes), whom they got from the orphanage, is actually his lovechild with his former flame, Miranda (Michelle Vito/Sharon Cuneta).

This revelation in “Saving Grace: The Untold Story” totally enraged Helena since she loathed Miranda so much, and she threatened to tell Anna the truth at that very moment. Antonio pleaded her not to, which led to their heated altercation and an accident that cost Antonio his life. Since then, Helena had grown apathetic towards Anna, who is completely oblivious about her true identity.

JR, confesses the disgusting truth to Cha, How To Spot A Red Flag

Despite being kind and honest towards him, “How To Spot A Red Flag”’s Cha (Belle Mariano) didn’t expect that one of her suitors, JR (Jameson Blake), whom she considered as her friend, would lie to her. After making her fall for his catfishing scheme, to which Cha had already forgiven him, JR then went on to confess to Cha that he was part of the group that scammed her and other people in their community.

This, of course, awfully hurt Cha, since she trusted him very much. So, she lashed out at him, not giving her the chance to explain why he didn’t have the guts to tell her during the times that they were together.

We may not know what the repercussions will be, but we can all agree that it’s still best to confess the truth because, as the oft-quoted adage says, “the truth will set you free.” What about you, Kapamilya? What’s the hardest and most heartbreaking confession that you’ve ever received or done?
