Sofronio Vasquez recalls life before winning 'The Voice USA': ‘I was working as a dental assistant’

<p>After making history as the first Asian to win in the talent show <em>The Voice USA</em> in 2024, Sofronio Vasquez has come a long way in being recognized for his singing career. The 33-year-old native of Misamis Occidental in Mindanao had originally joined <em>It’s Showtime</em>’s Tawag ng Tanghalan in 2017 before making the decision to move to the US in 2022 and pursue another career outside singing.  </p><div><br/></div><p>During the presscon for the upcoming Valentine’s concert <em>Champions of the Heart</em>, Sofronio looked back on the time when he doubted if he really could still pursue a career in singing.</p><div><br/></div><p>“Oh yes, before I did <em>The Voice</em>. That’s why I moved to America kasi I had an opportunity to pursue my dental career. So nagpunta ako dun without thinking of joining <em>The Voice.</em> I was working as a dental assistant and then just randomly habang nagpupunas ako ng aking dental chair, nag-ma-mop ako sa aming clinic, parang after the break, I just scrolled my phone and nakita lang na may virtual auditions for <em>The Voice</em>. And then from there, everything talaga nangyari na. Especially at that time na marami akong kasabayan na nagkakaroon ng pangalan like sila Gigi De Lana. And sometimes you ask this question na, ano bang kaya nila na hindi ko kaya? Which in reality as a person talaga makakaramdam ka ng ganun na, kaya ko naman gawin yung ginagawa nila, pero bakit hindi nabibigay sa akin? So you have to be patient but sometimes you always have to have the door from up above. But before I had <em>The Voice</em>, I had so many competitions back home dito sa Pilipinas. I think one of the major reasons why I did push my music even in America is being a champion of myself. You know, ini-expect kasi nila na nag-cha-champion ka, if you win.
