During the press conference of Combo on the Run, the upcoming documentary on the iconic '90s Pinoy band The Eraserheads, frontman Ely Buendia once again put to rest the longtime misconceptions surrounding their song "Spoliarium" which netizens speculated was about the late sexy star Pepsi Paloma.

The singer explained that their song did not in any way mean to allude to the real-life case.

“It’s not about TVJ," he clarified, before expounding, "They were my heroes. I wouldn’t dream of writing a song to tarnish my heroes. So I think that’s the most ridiculous. I will maintain until today that it’s not about them, it’s not about Pepsi (Paloma), and let the other hacks tackle that,” he shared during the Combo on the Run presscon held last February 17 at Guevarra’s in San Juan City.

The singer had already debunked rumors that the song was about Pepsi in the March 8, 2021 podcast of Wake Up With Jim & Saab with Jim Bacarro and Saab Magalona. He said the song is just about getting drunk.

“‘Spoliarium’ is one of those cases where really the myth has sort of taken over the facts and I kinda like it. I kinda like the myth, because the actual meaning of the song is also again, just really mundane,” he explained back then

Ely shared during the presscon that he and his band members are happy with the way the songs of the Eraserheads have remained relevant today and have transcended generations of OPM lovers.

“I’m not surprised. And I don’t mean that in an arrogant way. Because from the very beginning, the band took pains to create something first of all, relatable, and timeless themes. That’s no accident because we wanted to transcend generations and that’s what the band is all about. Because we’ve been inspired by the previous generation to make music and this is sort of paying forward and giving back, to inspire new musicians and not just musicians but people who aren’t artists to go out there and be themselves and be there own person is such a gift and is still why we do this thing,” he said.

Eraserheads: Combo on the Run will be screened exclusively in cinemas nationwide from March 21 to 23, 2025. The documentary is directed by Diane Ventura and produced by DVent Pictures and WEU. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
