MANILA — Scottish actor and “Game of Thrones” star Iain Glen is all praises for Jerrold Tarrog's upcoming historical film, “Quezon", saying he said yes to the role of Governor General Leonard Wood because of a really good script.

“Just a really, really good script which was sent, and I thought ‘This is fantastic piece of historical filmmaking!’ and then realized it was part of a trilogy of films, and then I had a look at those two films… and I thought they were really tremendous… really, really strong work,” Glen said in an interview with ANC's Rico Hizon.

"Quezon" marks the continuation of TBA Studios’ cinematic “Bayaniverse”,  a series of films based on Philippine history that includes box office hits “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral.”

The movie will follow the life of Manuel L. Quezon, a Filipino lawyer and soldier who became the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944. It will highlight his tumultuous presidential campaign against then-President Emilio Aguinaldo.

To prepare for his role as Governor General Leonard Wood, Glen said he did his own research in order to show an accurate representation of the American figure.

“I read some of the writings of Leonard Wood, [and] I was given a production by Jerrold [Tarog], articles about him specifically about the cabinet crisis that the film covers. And there was some sort of very, very, interesting archive of Leonard Wood… It was a hundred years ago, film archive footage of the man himself and he actually suffered from shrapnel… and he ended up with one leg that wasn’t working properly and one arm that also wasn’t working properly, so I had to incorporate that to the performance,” Glen said.

He praised the film’s director and his approach in carefully crafting the historical film.

“Jerrold Tarog is a fantastic director,  and he’s been working on this film for quite some time… and he did the first one so many years ago. I think it’s great for the Philippines to have this almost like it’s a… historical document to where democracy is being taken for granted nowadays, and this is kind of how it came about,” Glen said.

"When he gets on sets and you're doing a line, he's trying to be as playful as possible. He's wonderful to work with,” he added.

Glen also praised his co-actor Jericho Rosales, who plays the lead in the movie.

”He's a brilliant actor. No doubt about it. He also has musical ability. He's very charismatic. And he's a very humble guy. To me, as an outsider coming in, he's incredibly welcoming and kind and very generous as a performer. It feels, all the actors that I worked with were very good,” he said.

Glen also reflected on the impact of the globally acclaimed series "Game of Thrones" on his career. "I think Game of Thrones for all of us, for everyone involved, it was a decade of my life and the people who worked in the series all the way through. You know, I was about 50 when I took the role. And something like Game of Thrones was such a global massive massive hit. It just set you up and keeps you going.”

Asked if “Quezon” has the potential to be a critically acclaimed movie, Glen was confident in its success.

“I think they're masterpieces. They are pieces of great historical filmmaking. Everything, all directions are brilliant. The characters are brilliant. Storytelling is brilliant. This is Philippine history. I think it's great that people [stay in] touch with it, things that you take for granted. It's beautifully produced and I think it's a fantastic piece of film to watch,” he said.
