Netflix Philippines took a trip down memory lane, celebrating the golden era of ‘90s local entertainment with a special video featuring iconic host Boy Abunda—this time, with a futuristic twist.

In the nostalgic segment titled Showbzz, released on Netflix Philippines' official social media pages, Boy Abunda brings back his signature style, delivering his "eksklusibo (exclusive), eksplosibo (explosive)" showbiz scoops. The reimagined ‘90s entertainment world blends classic Filipino stars with a sci-fi twist, where celebrities’ lives intertwine with robots.

“This isn't just a bunch of Chuva Choo Choo! Get the freshest showbuzz chika of the ’90s straight from Tito Boy and the bots 🤖 Watch The Electric State, now playing only on Netflix!” said in a caption.

The feature highlights Filipino icons such as Gladys Reyes, Claudine Barretto, and Raimund Marasigan in a world where humans and robots co-exist. According to Netflix, the concept “offers a fascinating glimpse into a world where technology and nostalgia collide.”

Stars of the ‘90s joined in on the fun by posting throwback photos on social media.

Kapamilya actress Jolina Magdangal shared an old photo of her recording in a studio, saying, “✨ Langit. Baby, langit na ‘tong recording na ‘to ✨‘Di ko aakalain na tatak talaga yung kanta ko sa Batang 90s and Gen Zs ngayon. Comeback song na ba ako? #TheElectricState @netflixph.”

Actress Alice Dixson posted a vintage picture, asking fans if she should bring back her ‘90s hairstyle.

“Checking my old photo albums. Ibalik ko na ba itong 90’s hairstyle ko ulit? 🤭 #TheElectricState @netflixph,” Alice wrote.

The video campaign ties into Netflix’s latest sci-fi action-adventure film, The Electric State, starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes). She plays Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating a society where sentient robots, once peacefully co-existing with humans, have been exiled following a failed uprising.

According to the official synopsis, “Michelle’s world is turned upside down when she is visited by Cosmo, a mysterious robot linked to her presumed-dead younger brother, Christopher. Determined to find him, she embarks on a journey across the American southwest with Cosmo, teaming up with Keats (Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World), a smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off desert where robots live independently, they uncover a sinister plot surrounding Christopher’s disappearance.”

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (Avengers: Endgame), the film boasts an all-star cast, including Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, Jason Alexander, Giancarlo Esposito, Stanley Tucci, and Woody Norman. The voices of the robots are brought to life by Mackie, Woody Harrelson, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, and Alan Tudyk.

Based on the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, The Electric State was adapted for the screen by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. 

The Electric State is now available for streaming on Netflix.
