MANILA — Director Jason Paul Laxamana is confident in the long-term success of “Mathon,” the tandem of Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings, whom he directed in the Netflix original film “Sosyal Climbers.”

Laxamana believes their potential and undeniable on-screen chemistry are too promising to go to waste.

“Magtatagal pa 'yan on the sole basis of their talent. Nothing really beats talent,” he said in an interview held in Quezon City, Wednesday evening.

“Kung ano ang personal issues, that is out of my jurisdiction. As their director, fellow artist, yun lang concern ko. And if on talent alone, the future is looking bright for them as a love team and individuals,” he added.

According to the director, their natural chemistry and creativity bring an extra layer of depth and excitement to every scene.

“Lagi sa mga eksena, they do not fail to add an extra spice kung ano man ang dinerect ko. Meron silang magic as actors. Napaka-quick witted nila. Talagang mag-eenjoy ka kung anong surprises dadalin nila,” he explained.

Vitto Lazatin, Netflix Philippines’ head of content, likewise said Jennings and Racal brought “tremendous depth, chemistry, and energy,” to the movie.

“Whether it is Ray or Jessa or Kiefer or Penelope, I can safely say no other actors could have brought these characters to life better than Anthony Jennings and Maris Racal,” he said.

“Sosyal Climbers,” which will be streaming on Netflix Feb 27,  is the first original film of the streaming giant with  ABS-CBN.

“This is our first collaboration with one of the finest story tellers, ABS-CBN Studios. It was first pitched to us late 2022… We are extremely proud of this film,” Lazatin recalled.

The executive also described the romcom as  a “healthy serving of heart, humor and kilig.”

“It is an engaging and fun story of  the pursuit of a ‘better life,’ a humorous and very Filipino take of rich vs poor, and at it’s core a very relatable relationship story that proves getting together with someone is one thing but staying together is one of life’s greatest challenges,” he said.
