Lee Jung-jae, the lead star of the global phenomenon "Squid Game," offered praise for fellow actor Gong Yoo over their shared scene in the first episode of the series' second season.

"Squid Game," which debuted in 2021, follows a group of financially struggling individuals who participate in a series of deadly versions of children's games, all for a chance to win a large cash prize.

In the second season, which premiered last Dec. 26, Jung-jae returns as Seong Gi-hun, the sole survivor and winner of the games in the first season.

Gong Yoo also reprises his role as the enigmatic man who recruits players into the deadly competition.

In a video released by Netflix K-content, Jung-jae lauded Gong Yoo for their scene that closed the season premiere, where their characters were locked in a tense and deadly game of Russian Roulette.

"I kept telling Gong Yoo that he did an amazing job. And I really meant it. He's not just charismatic but also mischievous in the scene. He even looks frightening and embodies all that in his acting," said the 52-year-old actor, whose decades-long career has earned him several prestigious awards.

Jung-jae said fans of Gong Yoo, best known for starring in the romance series "Coffee Prince" and "Goblin," would enjoy "seeing a new side of him in this scene."

The actor said the scene "couldn't have served better as a perfect climax" for the first episode.

"There's another roulette scene earlier on [in the episode]. It's as horrifying as it is humorous. It's a very complex scene. In the natural flow of these scenes, I think the audience will really be drawn in," he said.

"Squid Game 2" follows Jung-jae's Gi-hun as he returns to the games, determined to put an end to them once and for all.

The season also saw the return of cast members Lee Byung-hun and Wi Ha-joon, alongside the addition of a star-studded lineup that includes Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-shim, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-wook and Choi Seung-hyun, among others.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has said "Squid Game" is set to end with its third season that would come out in 2025.

While "Squid Game" catapulted Jung-jae to greater international fame, the actor has long been a prominent figure in the South Korean entertainment industry, having earned six Baeksang Arts awards.

For his performance in "Squid Game," Jung-jae also became the first Asian actor to win an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama series.
