With drama, horror, or comedy almost always being the most popular choice for film genres at the Metro Manila Film Festival, BrightBurn Entertainment’s first film project Green Bones will help make your top choice easy. Dennis Trillo and Ruru Madrid’s unexpectedly heartwarming film may look like a typical prison drama but the truth is, its trailer leaves just the right amount of breadcrumbs that will bring you on a satisfying journey until the very end.

Shot by talented director Zig Dulay who won MMFF Best Picture last year for his fantasy drama Firefly, his latest offering proves once again to be one of the strongest contenders for the coveted award again this year. Here’s our top reasons this is THE film you shouldn’t miss on the big screen this season.

EVERY CHARACTER COUNTS

Though the film is told mostly from the point of view of the two main characters, Green Bones boasts of an ensemble cast of talented characters that will make their mark in every scene. This means the audience will not have to worry about any lag time or unnecessary extended scenes where they will be too busy rooting for them or hating them during the entire two hour film. Even the smaller roles get their turn in the spotlight which will surely soften your heart with each touching revelation.

THERE ARE LOTS OF UNEXPECTED TWISTS IN THE STORY

With a smartly edited trailer that makes you think you already know where the plot is going before you even watch the film, Green Bones leads you in at just the right pace, making sure to take its time unravelling each dark and impressive layer in its storyline. As expected, National Artist for Film awardee Ricky Lee made sure that the first half of the story is already strong and compelling, even without the added surprises which seem designed to soften even the hardest of hearts.

RURU MADRID WILL IMPRESS YOU

If you aren’t already familiar with this Kapuso star, you can expect Ruru Madrid to leave a mark on the audience in this film, not just because it is mostly told from his point of view, but because the character he portrays goes through the biggest awakening internally. Ruru plays the role of Xavier Gonzaga, a newly appointed corrections officer assigned to a penal colony outside Metro Manila. As a new criminology graduate, Gonzaga hopes to prove to his superior that criminals will never change and do not deserve equal rights like convicted murderer Dom Zamora (played by Dennis Trillo).

DENNIS TRILLO NEEDS NO WORDS

Apart from playing a crucial role in choosing to produce this project under his own company, BrightBurn Entertainment, Dennis Trillo will have you putting to rest any doubts about being cast in the lead role way before you even finish watching the film. With a character that can leave you intimidated, intrigued, or even scared with just one look from him, Dennis fully transforms himself as the man with the most precious secrets borne out of love in Green Bones. And even when he is doing sign language, he shows that his ability to touch the audience doesn’t need much words.

GREEN BONES DOES NOT FORCE YOU TO CRY

Don’t be surprised if you do, at different times during this beautifully shot two-hour film, shed a few tears. The acting and dialogue is moving, even during the scenes where the drama is not the main point. The development of the story will hook you in and by the time everything becomes revealed, it won’t be totally unexpected for tears not to flow. But it is not meant to be a sad film. It is a story of inspiration and redemption. So enjoy the emotions and just cry that good cry.

Watch Green Bones as part of the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival now showing in cinemas nationwide. The film stars Ruru Madrid, Dennis Trillo, Alessandra de Rossi, Iza Calzado, Wendell Ramos, Michael de Mesa, Victor Neri, Royce Cabrera, Ronnie Lazaro, and Sofia Pablo. Directed by Zig Dulay.
