The 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival roster is proving to be one of the most interesting batch of entries. It’s not just because of all the talented celebrities headlining each project, but the intriguing lineup of stories competing and hoping to encourage more Pinoys to line up for local cinema this month. Movie aficionado or not, do yourself a favor and check out what our local films have to offer and you won't be disappointed. Here are our top ten reasons you shouldn’t miss the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival.

1. FOR THOSE WHO MISS BEING WITH FAMILY

Vice Ganda’s latest entry surprisingly shows off more of his dramatic side this time around as he plays the role of Bambi Salvador, an OFW in Taiwan who has devoted her life to supporting her family. Upon returning to the Philippines, he ends up facing the reality and pressure of being the family breadwinner as he decides if being alive is worth more than the money his loved ones will get once he is declared deceased.

Despite its somewhat dramatic premise, fans can be rest assured that the film will not run short of the comedy they have come to expect from every Vice Ganda project. Whether you come from a big or small family, everyone is sure to relate to one or all of the issues that the Salvador family faces in this two hour dramedy from Star Cinema.

2. FOR THOSE WANT TO LET OFF SOME STEAM

The holidays can bring merriment and joy along with a hectic season of challenges as we try to enjoy life despite the everyday challenges. If you’re looking for a film that will take you away from dealing with the stress of real life (even if its just for two hours) and give your mind something so interesting to watch that you won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen, then Vilma Santos and Aga Muhlach’s psychological thriller Uninvited is the perfect choice for you.

Aga plays the role of a billionaire who receives an unexpected guest at his birthday party while Vilma is a mother on a mission to avenge her daughter. Add to all that the head-turning scenes of Nadine Lustre as a bitchy heiress and you’re in for a deliciously dark, twisted ride full of revenge with just the right amount of drama included.

3. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE WHAT GOOD ACTION IS ALL ABOUT

It’s been a while since the era of Pinoy action films were ruled by the late king Fernando Poe Jr., but Topakk just might be the start of an action genre comeback. With a strong but almost silent performance, Arjo Atayde plays the role of a former soldier dealing with PTSD who finds work as a night security guard and ends up having to face a different kind of war when he chooses to save the life of a beautiful stranger played by Julia Montes.

We’re not kidding when we say that the action never stops in this Richard Somes film as the body count piles up right from the first few minutes up until the very end, with each kill getting more and more creative as the film goes along. But the acting is good from the main characters all the way to the support cast, which gives the audience a more enjoyable experience as they fight to the death with each encounter.

4. FOR THOSE WHO DREAM OF TRAVELING SOMEDAY SOON

Reunited onscreen two years since their first pairing in Expensive Candy, Carlo Aquino and Julia Barretto's entry Hold Me Close takes their audience to the land of the rising sun, where their characters Woody and Lynlyn randomly meet.

In the film, Julia’s character Lynlyn possesses a special ability to tell if a certain person will cause her happiness or harm after getting in contact with them. Aside from their unique connection, what makes the film interesting to watch is their chosen backdrop of a quieter but still scenic part of Japan. So whether it’s just wishful thinking or real life goals, Hold Me Close is bound to satisfy your wanderlust visually as a backdrop to this romantic drama.

5. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO TEST HOW BRAVE THEY REALLY ARE

Enrique Gil blurs the line between reality and fiction as he plays himself in Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital as the producer of the first Filipino live streaming show with amateur ghost hunters that aims to visit the most haunted places in the world.

The film is based on the 2018 South Korean film Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. Currently being dubbed as the Philippines' first-ever meta found footage horror film, the movie’s mockumentary format has it being presented to the viewer as if it were a non-fiction documentary. So if you are a fan or even just curious about Hollywood found footage films like The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and Cloverfield, then this should definitely be on your must-watch list.
