After its opening run during the first week of March, 9 Works Theatrical’s newest original Filipino production Liwanag Sa Dilim announced that it is extending its musical run until May 3, adding four more shows to its original schedule. The almost three hour show, which features OPM icon Rico Blanco’s well-loved hits, also performed to a sold-out crowd during its opening weekend last March 7.

The musical stars Alexa Ilacad, Khalil Ramos, Anthony Rosaldo, CJ Navato, and Nicole Omillo and also features a talented ensemble cast. The show’s writer and director, Robbie Guevarra, had previously shared with ABS-CBN that the Liwanag Sa Dilim script was seven years in the making.

“I wrote this in 2018 for a 2020 release. It is about a guy, Elesi, who was orphaned at a young age. When his adopted parents die, he goes on a quest to find his past. Along the way, he meets another guy, Cris, who instantly becomes his friend, and joins him in his fight to help the oppressed and underprivileged,” he shared.

Rico Blanco, who first watched the show during the preview night, said that he was impressed with the whole production.  “I’m kinda proud that I wrote those songs and what they’re singing. And after seeing what they did with it— with the songs — almost all the songs were arranged differently, and it’s so cool to see them used in a different way to tell a different story from what I originally dreamt and planned when I was writing those songs. Some songs became the opposite of what I meant them to be used for. Ang galing!” he told ABS-CBN.

The main draw of the show for Rico is the magic of being able to enjoy being transported to a familiar yet not-too-familiar reality which Filipino audiences will definitely enjoy. “Nadala ako sa ibang universe, eh. And I suppose, personally, we all go through life, stress, and whatnot. This was a really nice escape for me — to get transported to this universe. It’s something other people can experience. It’s not here forever. That’s the magic of musicals — you really have to catch the show,” he shared in a previous interview.
