It's that time of the year again to score some affordable art as the 19th edition of Art in the Park is happening this weekend. 

A total of 61 exhibitors representing galleries, collectives, and independent art spaces will offer pieces capped at P70,000 (don't worry, most of them are priced much lower) on March 23, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at Jaime Velasquez Park in Makati. 

Some of the featured artists this year include TRNZ, AR Manalo, and Carlo Tanseco -- the same man behind the standout "Sari-Sari Sabi-Sabi" exhibit on Filipino snacks at the recent Art Fair Philippines.

"Art in the Park has always been a casual day out to enjoy art," the event's co-founder, Trickie Lopa, told ABS-CBN News in a recent media merienda. "Art is spread across various areas and you're supposed to weave around the park, discover, peruse the art, and look through whatever is stacked in the tents."

"It's very casual, and that's what has made it great. That's what we try to recapture year after year, really," she added. "I personally use it to discover artists... a lot of them have their first major break into the art scene because of Art in the Park."

When asked if there's something new or different to look forward to in this year's edition, Lopa replied: "Very little. I mean, let's stick to what works, right? Why fix it if it's not broken?" It's actually a valid point -- if they've been around for 19 years, they're definitely doing it right.

Art in the Park, which started in 2006 as an anniversary event for Salcedo Market, primarily aims to raise funds for Museum Foundation of the Philippines. But over the years, it was able to achieve something even greater -- make art less intimidating to the average Filipino. 

It has a lot to do with the way the event is set up -- in an open space as opposed to within the white walls of an art gallery, plus food stalls and live music (this year's lineup includes the singer-songwriter duo Leanne and Naara, among others). 

"It's great for collectors who are starting out," said Lopa. "Or if you're interested in art, if you want to know if you can afford anything, you can come to Art in the Park." 

"For artists, it's also a way to experiment," she noted. "If you do it in Art in the Park, you won't be judged unlike in a formal exhibition."

Entrance to Art in the Park is free, with special perks awaiting BPI credit cardholders. More details are available on the event's website and social media pages. 

Over 30 female artists in Galerie Stephanie exhibit

Galerie Stephanie, which just had a successful showcase at Art Fair Tokyo 2025, is shining a spotlight on over 30 female artists in its latest exhibit. 

Curated by Gwen Bautista, "Emerging Out of a Crumbling Flank of Earth" continues the gallery's National Women's Month celebration, with the aim of showing female solidarity amid gender-based oppression. The title of the exhibit is lifted from Adrienne Rich's poem "Power," a tribute to the contributions of Polish-French scientist Marie Curie.

Kim Borja, Naburok, Jem Magbanua, and Thea Quiachon -- who were in Galerie Stephanie's lineup for Art Fair Tokyo 2025 -- are part of this all-woman show. 

Joining them are Wrenn, Alyson Ortega, Amiel Louise Rivera, Anna Orlina, Eunice Sanchez, Faye Pamintuan, Gabby Prado, Geri Gonzales, Grace Impas, Izza Catayas, Jessica Anne Alba, Jheane Borja, Julia Borja, Leahrly Curitana, Maica Borlagdan, Marie Nelle Valmoria, Microsluts, Nicole Asares, Nicole Bitas, Pepe Delfin, Poeleen Alvarez, Sam Bumanlag, Sher Cajucom, Shireen Co, Sophia Cabugoy, Tammy De Roca, Tia Avila, Tintin Lontoc, and Veronica Lazo. 

"Emerging Out of a Crumbling Flank of Earth" runs until March 30 at Galerie Stephanie, which is located at Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong City. More details are available on the gallery's social media pages. 

Filipino works in Art Basel Hong Kong

If you happen to be in Hong Kong, check out the Filipino works that will be on display in Art Basel this year. 

Art Basel Hong Kong, the city's largest international art fair, will run from March 28 to 30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

The late Pacita Abad, known for her vibrant trapunto paintings, is part of the "Encounters" sector which is dedicated to large-scale masterpieces. Three of her works will be presented by Silverlens and Tina Kim Gallery: "Through the Looking Glass" (1996), "Fly Into a Rage" (2000), and "The Sky is the Limit"(2000).

Silverlens (which has locations in Manila and New York) is joining Art Basel Hong Kong for the 12th year. Its booth at 1B12 will include works by Filipino artists Catalina Africa, Nicole Coson, Patricia Perez Eustaquio, Poklong Anading, Keka Enriquez, Gregory Halili, and Wawi Navarroza.

Local gallery The Drawing Room, meanwhile, will feature the creations of father and son duo Soler and Luis Antonio Santos. Soler's "Amalgam" assemblages on wood and Luis Antonio's "Untitled (Structures)" acrylic works can be found at booth 3C35. 

Art Basel Hong Kong is the centerpiece of "Super March," the city's celebration of art and culture events such as Art Central, HKwalls Street Art Festival, ComplexCon, and Hong Kong Arts Festival.
