MANILA — National Artist for film and broadcast arts Ricky Lee mourned the loss of Cannes Film Festival award-winning actress Jaclyn Jose.

Jose, born Mary Jane Guck, died in her residence in Quezon City on Saturday, March 2.

In an interview, Lee said he regrets that their plans to meet up since last year did not push through.

“Nagimbal ako. Nalungkot and then naisip ko na sana pala pinatulan ko na ‘yong madalas sinasabi niya last year na magkita kami. (Sabi niya) kapag magkikita-kita tayo together, mag-kwentuhan tayo. Parang ang dami dami nyang gustong i-share at kwento. So, naisip ko na sana pala nagkita kita na,” he said.

As a scriptwriter, Lee worked with Jose several times during her illustrious career, including the actress' first lead role in Chito Roño’s “Private Show” in 1984.

“Mahigit kumulang na 10 films ang nagawa ko with her. She makes the character shine.

They first met in the 1980s when Jose starred in adult dramas or more popularly known in the Philippines as “bold films.” At the time, Lee said Jose already made a big impression on top directors like Lino Brocka.

You can go beyond the bold image of the film and sa character na pino-portray. It’s the boldness of acting na binibigay niya.”

Lee described Jose as someone who is both humble on and off screen, allowing her talent and the characters she portrayed to take the spotlight.

Lee also recounted the time Jose took the stage to act for a play he had written.

‘Yong character na ang nandoon,” he said.

Lee agreed with the public when they dubbed Jose as the “Queen of Underacting” — showing restraint and subtlety in her performances and line deliveries.

Ayaw niyang inaarte ‘yong character.

I think in a way in-introduce niya at pinatanggap sa mga tao ‘yong ganong klase ng acting bilang isang maganda at mahusay at makatotohanang  pag-arte.”
