MANILA — From its beginnings as a mere station identifier set to music, ABS-CBN’s Christmas IDs—now an anticipated annual event for the Kapamilya “network”—have always featured its artists alongside its employees and even audiences.

But usually taking prominence near the end of the video are those seen as the company’s biggest talents especially that year.

Dubbed as “billing”, these solo frames of artists (and even on-screen love teams) usually cap off with the most prominent person for the year.

The 2024 Christmas ID “Our Stories Shine This Christmas” gave “It’s Showtime” host Vice Ganda the last shot before segueing to video of artists and employees clapping in the convergence shot.

SHOWBIZ ICONS

Over the 22 years since ABS-CBN’s first music video Christmas ID, several showbiz icons have earned prominence in that final frame.

Comedy King Dolphy—a home-grown ABS-CBN mainstay since its pre-Martial Law days—repeatedly closed out the station ID in its early years.

Veteran actress Charo Santos-Concio has the most “final frame” appearances—six solos, many of them with a speaking role.

Aside from being the host of long-running drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya”, Santos-Concio has been an ABS-CBN executive for decades—going up from overseeing its entertainment unit to being Channel 2 and broadcast head, president and CEO, and currently a member of its board of directors.

Fellow showbiz royalty Susan Roces-Poe has also joined Dolphy and Santos-Concio in the final artist frame on several occasions.

Other artists who have also landed the final frame include Coco Martin, Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo, Sharon Cuneta, Piolo Pascual, and Kris Aquino.

‘GIFT TO FANS’

These shots, along with the various takes of ABS-CBN stable of artists throughout the ID are considered a “gift to fans”, according to the makers of the Christmas ID from ABS-CBN Creative Communications Management (CCM).

“Napapansin mo sa comments, ‘di ba, naghahanap talaga sila ng hinahangaan nila, gusto nilang makita. At ‘pag hindi nakita, nagre-react sila. So, it's for them,” ABS-CBN CCM head Robert Labayen said in an interview.

(You notice in the online comments that they are really looking for the celebrities they admire and want to see. And they react if they don’t see them. So, it’s for them. )

Labayen also calls it a “show of force” despite the many challenges for the company.

“Nakakatuwa kang panoorin ‘to, you know, na wala tayong franchise, pero ang dami nating artista, mabibigat ang pangalan, at marami pang dumarating na bagong artista, parang there's something na kinagagalak natin. Meron tayong show of force talaga palagi,” Labayen added.

(Also, it’s heartwarming to watch knowing that despite having no franchise, we have many artists, many of them big names, and many new ones still join us. There’s something that brings us joy. We always have a show of force.)

There has also been an effort particularly in the latest Christmas ID to give longer exposure to the stable of artists.

As Christmas ID producer LA Sibug said, “walang Hagip Kamilya” (No Kapamilya only shown in passing).

“Naging mindset natin na nabigyan sila ng proper exposure, yung mahaba na talaga, yung matutuwa…’yong pamilya nila mismo,” Sibug added.

“So wala kaming tinipid na segundo para doon sa mga artist natin.”

(Our mindset was to give them proper exposure—a really long one that their families themselves would be happy with. So we did not shave off any second for our artists.)

BEYOND ARTISTS

However, the “final final” frame—the one before the logo of the station ID appears— does not always belong to an individual.

In multiple years, but most especially since 2020 after ABS-CBN lost its broadcast franchise, shots of ordinary Filipinos or the convergence of Kapamilyas have closed out the Christmas ID.

In 2023’s “Pasko ang Pinakamagandang Kwento”, the last clip showed a couple who had difficulty conceiving in front of a Nativity scene or belen holding their new baby—a parallel to the Christmas story.

For the people making these Christmas IDs, each video hopes to drive home that at the heart of the “storyteller” company is not its personalities, but its audience and the subjects of their stories.

“‘Yong kapwa Pilipino natin, sila yung ABS-CBN, e. Ayun yung mga kwento natin tungkol sa kanila talaga. Pinapasalamatan natin sila dahil emotional kami sa support ng mga kapwa natin,” Labayen said.

“So bilang ganti sa kanila, binibigay namin din ang parangal sa kanila.”

(Our fellow Filipinos are ABS-CBN. Our stories are ultimately about them. We thank them because we are emotional with their support. So in gratitude, we honor them with this.)
