The Philippine entertainment industry is mourning the passing of veteran entertainment journalist and host Jobert Sucaldito, whose decades-long career left a lasting mark on show business. Jobert passed away on Sunday, August 2, at the age of 65. His death was announced through the Facebook page OOTD Jobert and Chaps Channel, the online platform dedicated to the YouTube program he co-hosted with director Chaps Manansala. &quot;Lubos po naming ipinapaalam na ang aming pinakamamahal na Nanay Jobert Sucaldito ay mapayapang pumanaw ngayong Agosto 2, 2026,&quot; the statement read. &quot;Maraming salamat sa inyong walang sawang pagmamahal, suporta, panalangin, at pagtangkilik sa kanya sa paglipas ng mga taon. Ang kanyang mga alaala, kabutihan, at mga naiwan niyang kwento ay mananatiling buhay sa aming mga puso,&quot; it added. A succeeding post shared that an incident occurred at his residence in Kamias, Quezon City, between 9:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. He was immediately rushed to the Philippine Heart Center, where doctors tried to revive him. He was later pronounced dead at around 10:30 a.m.  <div> </div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1785754732959jon.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/></div><div> </div>As colleagues, artists, and fans remember his life, many are also looking back on the remarkable journey that made Jobert one of the country&#x27;s most recognizable entertainment journalists. Born on April 16, 1961, Jobert spent decades covering the local entertainment industry as a columnist, broadcaster, talent manager, film producer, and digital content creator. Throughout the years, he became known for his fearless opinions, unmistakable broadcasting style, and deep knowledge of Philippine show business. Jobert has always been honest about never finishing a degree related to journalism. Instead, it was his passion for entertainment and determination to learn that ultimately shaped his career. During a 2023 interview with Snooky Serna, Jobert recalled how his fascination with show business started while growing up in Iloilo. &quot;Sa probinsya kasi namin [sa Iloilo], usong-uso &#x27;yung mga nire-rent na magazines, song hits...Mahilig talaga ako magbasa ng mga showbiz chismis, marites na ako at that time. Binabasa ko &#x27;yung mga article nina Tito Alfie Lorenzo, Nanay Lolit Solis, [at] Ethel Ramos. So ngayon, fan ako ni Nora Aunor. Ang ginagawa ko, kasi wala kaming TV, I would walk a kilometer to go to my lola&#x27;s house pag Sabado para manuod ng Superstar. Sa bintana lang kami nanunuod kasi wala kaming TV,” he shared.While growing up, financial difficulties eventually pushed Jobert to leave Iloilo in search of better opportunities in Manila. As he tried to take his chance, he experienced a major setback.  &quot;I was studying at UP Iloilo, first year college. Nung pa-second year na, naramdaman ko na parang wala na yatang masyadong pampaaral sa akin &#x27;yung tatay ko. Parang naghihirap kami. So sumakay ako ng barko, dala-dala ko &#x27;yung transcript of records ko from UP Iloilo to transfer to UP Manila. Pagdating ko sa Maynila, nawala pala &#x27;yung mga documents ko, naiwanan sa barko.&quot; Without his physical school records during a time when digital copies did not exist, Jobert was unable to enroll and continue his studies. Instead of giving up on his dream, Jobert chose to move forward and look for another path. Rather than return home, he decided to stay in Manila and joined the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) in the 1980s, where he immersed himself in theater production and discovered a new path. It was also during this period that he met the late playwright and entertainment columnist George Vail Kabristante, who encouraged him to try writing entertainment stories. George eventually referred him to the popular magazine Jingle Extra Hot, where Jobert received his very first assignment: to interview the late actress, Cherie Gil. Recalling their first meeting, Jobert remembered the veteran actress with great admiration. &quot;She was so kind. Contrary to her image na maldita, she was so kind.&quot; According to Jobert, Cherie not only granted him an interview but even helped a newcomer like him by suggesting story ideas, questions, and topics that he could write about. That opportunity opened the doors to a career that would span more than four decades. By the 1990s, Jobert&#x27;s friendship with veteran host Boy Abunda led him into television and radio. He became part of GMA&#x27;s entertainment programs Show &amp; Tell and Startalk before eventually transferring to ABS-CBN and becoming part of The Buzz. From there, Jobert steadily established himself as one of Philippine entertainment journalism&#x27;s most recognizable personalities. By 2000s, he joined DZMM where he became a familiar voice to radio listeners through entertainment programs, including the Showbuzz segment alongside fellow veteran journalist Ahwel Paz. Through the online program, the pair discussed the latest showbiz headlines, politics, blind items, and current issues, attracting a loyal audience that appreciated their candid discussions. Known for speaking his mind, Jobert built a reputation as one of entertainment journalism&#x27;s most outspoken commentators. His strong opinions often generated public debate and, at times, even legal disputes involving celebrities and public personalities. Despite the controversies, Jobert maintained in the interview with Snooky that honesty had always guided his work and that his strong personality was innate to him.  &quot;Hindi ko ito sinasadya. Siguro innate na rin sa akin ang ganitong personality. But I am not a bad person. I just like them to know na hindi ako gagawa lang ng kwento para manggamit o makasakit. Paninindigan ko &#x27;yan because I stand by my stories and these are real stories,&quot; he said. As the entertainment industry bids Jobert farewell, the stories he told, the conversations he sparked, and the legacy he built over decades in journalism remain part of the history of Philippine entertainment. Official medical findings regarding the cause of his passing are yet to be shared by his loved ones. His wake will be held at the Loyola Memorial Park in Quezon City, with public viewing scheduled from August 3 to August 6, allowing family, friends, colleagues, and supporters to pay their final respects to the veteran journalist. He will be laid rest through cremation on August 6.
