However, everything changed when they discovered that Benjamin had Angelman syndrome, which affected his intellectual development. What should have been a journey of acceptance instead became a source of shame for some members of the family. </p><p>Seen as a disgrace to their highly respected name, Benjamin became the target of a cruel scheme orchestrated by Dr. Alberta. She arranged for the child to be taken away and made it appear as though he had been kidnapped. </p><p>The young Benjamin was entrusted to his caretaker, Jinggay (Arlene Muhlach). But when Jinggay died from a heart attack, the responsibility of raising him fell to Elena (Janice De Belen), a former maid of the Maniego family who welcomed him into her home and cared for him as her own child. </p><p>Meanwhile, Luisa was devastated by the loss of her son and spent years mourning him. Hoping to ease her pain, Dr. Anton agreed to adopt another child named BJ (Enrique Gil) and make Luisa believe that he was Benjamin. Away from the Maniego family and surrounded by the love of Elena and his grandfather Renato (Dante Rivero), Budoy grew into a warm, cheerful, and optimistic young man. </p><p>Despite his condition, Budoy was able to live a meaningful life. He worked as a school janitor, made friends, and pursued education because he believed learning could help lift his adoptive family out of poverty. </p><p>This is where the iconic line &quot;Ako Budoy!&quot; came from. </p><p>Budoy would often introduce himself with those words whenever he met someone new. Yet despite these experiences, he maintained a positive outlook and remained kind even to those who bullied him. </p><p>One of the people who accepted him wholeheartedly was his childhood friend, Jackie (Jessy Mendiola). Budoy reunited with her while working at a university that his biological family owns, and the two eventually formed a deep bond that became one of the most beloved relationships in the series. </p><p>The story took another dramatic turn when Budoy unknowingly crossed paths with his biological family through the university. Every time Budoy said the line, it showed his openness to connect with people despite being repeatedly judged because of his condition.  </p><p>The phrase also became a reflection of Budoy&#x27;s innocence and sincerity. While many of the people he encountered misunderstood or underestimated him, Budoy never allowed those experiences to change the way he treated others. Instead, he continued introducing himself with the same warmth and enthusiasm, making the line one of the most memorable parts of the series.  </p><p>The teleserye also became a major hit because audiences connected with its powerful themes of family, acceptance, resilience, and unconditional love. Budoy&#x27;s story showed that people living with intellectual and developmental disabilities can learn, work, form meaningful relationships, and make a difference in the lives of others. </p><p>More importantly, <em>Budoy </em>became one of the pioneering advocacy-driven teleseryes on Philippine television. At a time when intellectual and developmental disabilities were rarely portrayed in mainstream entertainment, the series helped introduce many Filipino viewers to the realities faced by individuals with special needs and their families. </p><p>The show encouraged conversations about empathy, inclusion, and understanding. It challenged stereotypes and helped many viewers see beyond a person&#x27;s condition. </p><p>Much of the show&#x27;s success was credited to Gerald’s portrayal of Budoy. </p><p>Coming off the success of the hugely popular <em>Kimerald </em>love team with former girlfriend Kim Chiu, the actor took a significant risk by accepting a role far removed from the typical leading-man image audiences had come to expect from him. </p><p>In a 2025 interview with Luis Manzano, Gerald admitted that taking on <em>Budoy </em>was an unconventional career move. </p><p>“Sa formula ng showbiz, eh leading man tayo eh... Pero eto, binali ko talaga. Because that was kind of the end of the era nung love team namin. So I knew I couldn’t just be a leading man. I have to bring something else to the table. I have to be unique,” he admitted. </p><p>Preparing for the role was something Gerald took seriously. Because of the delicate subject matter, he spent considerable time researching and immersing himself in the experiences of people with similar conditions and their families. </p><p>For him, portraying Budoy was not only an acting challenge but also an opportunity to advocate for greater awareness and understanding. </p><p>“The blessing behind all of it was after nung show na yun or even during nung show, yung social awareness na nabigay niya,&quot; he shared. </p><p>&quot;I had a TFC show in London, ang daming special children na pumunta sa show ko. Yung mga magulang nila hindi na nahihiya, or wala ng stigma. I’ll never forget this, nasa Rockwell ako, they came up to me (and said), ‘Thank you, thank you.’ I get emotional about it kasi yung social awareness, the impact of what we do, we have responsibilities,” he added.  </p><p>Earlier in 2021, Gerald also reflected on how some people use the name Budoy to mock him. Rather than taking offense, he said the character remains one of the roles he is proudest of. </p><p>“I will forever be proud of Budoy. Kahit paulit-ulit mo akong tawagin na Budoy buong buhay ko, it’s something I’ll always be proud of.” </p><p>Because of its story and Gerald’s acclaimed performance, <em>Budoy </em>became a finalist in the Drama category at the 2013 New York Festivals.
