BANGKOK, Thailand — South Korean dramas often double as showcases for the country’s vibrant food culture, putting the spotlight on everything from ramyeon and corn dogs to sizzling Korean barbecues and bottles of soju.

And for celebrity couple Karylle and Yael Yuzon, food becomes part of their way to bond as they binge their favorite shows.

“‘Yong bonding namin, siguro, number one, ‘pag nanonood kami ng K-drama, may pagkain. Kung ano man ‘yong kinakain ng mga bida doon sa show, ‘yon din kakainin namin,” Karylle shared with select Filipino reporters present at the recent blue carpet premiere of the South Korean series “Good Boy” in this city.

(Our bonding, maybe, number one is when we watch K-dramas, there’s always food. Whatever the main characters in the show are eating, that’s what we eat too.)

But Karylle and Yael aren’t ones to keep their cravings to themselves.

“Namimigay din kami so nakakatuwa kasi ‘yong isa sa mga favorite namin dati, corndog, and namigay kami ng corndog. Hihingin namin ‘yong address ng mga kaibigan tapos nakita ko nga si TJ [Monterde] saka si KZ [Tandingan] pala, pinadalhan din namin ng corndog at one point,” the “It’s Showtime” host shared.

(We also give out food, which is fun because one of our favorites before was corndogs and we gave away corndogs. We’d ask our friends for their addresses, and I even saw that at one point, we sent corndogs to TJ [Monterde] and KZ [Tandingan] too.)

“So I think of all the things that we watch, we like to recreate the food part, tapos o-order din kami. Basta kapag K-drama night, may soju, lactobacilli,” she added.

Karylle and Yael are both known avid K-drama fans, with the former even naming her podcast “K’s Drama,” which sounds similar to K-drama. In 2024, Yael’s band, Sponge Cola, also released the song “Tatlong Buwan,” which was inspired by the romantic-comedy series “Queen of Tears.”

At the Bangkok premiere of “Good Boy,” hosted by Prime Video where the series is available for streaming, Karylle had the opportunity to ask cast members Park Bo-gum, Kim So-hyun and Lee Sang-yi about how they prepared for their roles.

Attending exclusive events and meeting K-drama stars, Karylle seems to be living every fan’s dream. But the singer-actress was quick to clarify that her love for K-dramas isn’t just a passing trend. She’s been a devoted fan for years, patiently waiting for her own “successful fan” moments to arrive.

“Pumila naman ako at ‘yong mga resibo nasa X (formerly Twitter). Buti na lang hindi siya nawawala,” Karylle said, noting how some social media users would often tell her to “fall in line” when it comes to meeting Korean celebrities.

“Matagal din akong naghintay so I think everyone will get their turn ‘di ba?” she added.
