MANILA — Actress Candy Pangilinan said she found comfort in the support she received from social media users after a video of her breaking down during one of her son Quentin’s tantrums went viral.

Pangilinan admitted that she initially felt hesitant to post the video, but realized it was a way to connect with other parents who faced similar situations.

In the raw and unguarded moment unintentionally captured by Pangilinan, she was moved to tears for the first time in front of Quentin, who has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

“After posting that, I was scared. But I realized marami ang makaka relate na it is natural to get tired. It is okay to get tired. It felt good umamin na we get tired— wag lang susuko,” she said.

“That was when I realized when I read comments na there are alot of people going through a lot of things. It is okay to get tired and we are human,” she added.

The comedienne is often hailed as a “supermom,” but said behind the label is exhaustion and vulnerability, reminding everyone that even the strongest parents need to embrace their human limits.

“They keep saying I am supermom and accidentaly na record ko— I showed them the human side. Hindi sila nag-iisa, napapagod din ako,” she said. “Napapagod tayo pero ang importante hindi susuko… [What keeps me going is] pagiging nanay, because we are needed. We have to go on.”

Pangilinan posted the video in time for Autism Awareness Month. But for her, it’s no longer just about awareness.

“It is autism month, lagpas na tayo sa awareness. Acceptance na tayo. We need to learn to accept. If the family or parents do not learn to accept ano problema, what more people around us. We are aware of autism, ADHD, but are we ready to accept them to be part of the community. Makatabi natin, makausap,” she said.

The actress proudly shared Quentin, who has been working at an Italian restaurant, is starting to find his place.

“OJT siya ngayon sa isang Italian restaurant. Two months na. Nagse-serve na siya, coffee, juice, ano orders. He mops, he washes plates, first job niya,” she said.

“Kinabahan ako ng una, baka mabasag pinggan, but so far he is doing well and is very happy. Ngayon he wants to stay there,” she added.

Pangilinan said her son is keen on following in her footsteps someday.

“Gusto niya umarte. He has [a knack] for comedy. I don’t think he is ready for job requirements but baka with me lang muna, fun-fun lang,” she said.
