Former basketball player and TV host Chris Tiu shared a special moment he had with the late Pope Francis during his visit to the Vatican.

On his social media page, Christ shared what Pope Francis told him as he was able to shake his hand during a Papal Audience way back in 2015.

“I still vividly remember this moment in the photo 10 years ago, in the summer of 2015 in Vatican. I got the chance to meet you during the Papal Audience. You told me to always pray for you and then you handed me a rosary,” Chris wrote.

Reflecting on the once-in-a-lifetime moment, he added, “I remember feeling stunned as if I had met a saint and felt a call to be holier and to act with kindness.”

On Easter Monday, April 21, Cardinal Kevin Farrell released an official statement announcing the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88. According to Vatican News, the Argentine pontiff died of a stroke, less than a month after returning home from a five-week hospitalization due to double pneumonia.

Leaving a very important legacy of championing the poor, campaigning for action against climate change, emphasizing love over doctrine, and inclusivity, Chris expressed gratitude for the late Santo Papa.

“Thank you Papa Francesco for your steadfast leadership through such challenging and complex times. Your life of service and unwavering loyalty to God & the Church has inspired me and so many others,” he expressed.

He went on: “You have championed inclusivity, mercy, simplicity, charity, peace and love among many others which is exactly what we need in this world!! Thank you for everything!! We love you and I will miss you so much!! 💔💔💔”

“We are so blessed to have you as our Pope during our lifetime. Truly, you are God’s precious gift to humankind.”

Chris also shared how the Pope’s words and humility continue to guide him.

“When I am confused or lost, I look to your words and example as my guide. I hope we can honor you and your legacy through our own actions in our little lives.”

He concluded his message, saying, “This is one of the highlights of my life and I will cherish this forever. Rest in Peace now our dearest Pope Francis 🙏.”

Aside from Chris, other Filipino celebrities and personalities who were able to meet the pope up close, shared their memorable moments.

Singer and It’s Showtime host Darren Espanto recalled performing for the pontiff during his 2015 visit to the Philippines.

ASAP singer Erik Santos also expressed gratitude for the chance to sing at the conclusion of Pope Francis’ Eucharistic Celebration in 2015.

“To be a part of this huge gathering in 2015 was one of my life’s greatest moments as a Christian. Rest in peace, our beloved Pope Francis. 🙏🏻🤍+,” he expressed.

Veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez recalled covering Pope Francis’ appearance at the Vatican.

“I remember very well that day at St. Peter’s Square where all the devotees and press were anxious about the overcast sky threatening to literally rain on Pope Francis’ parade. And as Pope Francis emerged and waved from his Pope Mobile through the adoring crowd, the sky —— it just unimaginably opened up to rays of sunshine,” she shared.

Korina also reflected on her experiences covering various popes throughout her career.

“I have seen five Popes in my lifetime and more for the others. As reporters we have covered Pope John Paul, Pope Benedict, Pope Francis and looking forward to the next one, hopefully yet the best who will further lead humanity towards love for all creation, equanimity and peace. Thank you, Pope Francis. 🙏,” Korina remarked.
