Kapamilya singer Maki shared how important it is for artists to have their own say in the creative direction of their careers. The singer-songwriter shared with PUSH ABS-CBN how he was able to input his thoughts and opinions in the music video of his single, “Bughaw”.

Maki had a hand in directing and choosing the people involved in the music video. His latest music video featured HORI7ON member Kyler, former YGIG member Alexei, and singer Zeke Abella.

The singer-songwriter shared that it has always been a dream for him to direct something. He even recalled his younger years when he wanted to direct in the school plays. For him, giving his input in “Bughaw” opened  doors for more opportunities in the future.

“This is a very dream come true moment for me kasi I got to direct most of the parts of the music video and kumbaga ‘yung creative direction ko nakikita ko na in full,” he shared.

Maki admitted that it was a hard task to do at first as he is still exploring, but expressed how much he enjoyed the process of learning.

“It was hard at first kasi it’s a new realm I try to explore, but at the same time I try to enjoy it. I know it’s gonna be something I want to do for a long time. Malay niyo, pwede na ako maging singer, pwede na ako maging director. It was a crazy ride–– learning new things [and] being able to compromise. At the end of the day, nakagawa kami ng craft that we would be proud of,” he added.

When asked about the creative freedom being given to him by his record label, Tarsier Records, the singer-songwriter shared how important it is that he is able to give his opinion on his career path.

Maki shared that as process-driven as he is, he makes sure that his music is a reflection of who he is as an artist.

“Artists talaga they deserve to be heard, they deserve to not take control but to add more to what they have in mind. Kung ano ‘yung meron sila within, dapat nae-express nila yun kasi ‘yun ‘yung craft nila. That’s the very essence of art,” he maintained.

Meanwhile, Maki is set to release his first full-length album, KOLORCOASTER, soon. The album will feature the three singles –– “Dilaw”, “Namumula”, and “Bughaw” –– on top of his yet unreleased songs.
