Returning as one of the judges in Tawag ng Tanghalan’s Grand Resbak season starting this month, singer and songwriter Ogie Alcasid recently joined the 48 returning contestants of the popular It’s Showtime segment during the All Star Grand Resbak Media Con earlier this month.
During the event, Ogie shared how he plans to judge this new season. “In terms of strictness, these are people who already know their craft. But I think what they deserve from me is my honesty. I think I need to be honest with how they make us feel when they perform. Dahil magagaling na sila it’s probably just a matter of who wants it more. What I wish for all of them is the constant energy and just hunger I suppose. Kahit alam ko na magkakaibigan sila, pero habang nasa enteblado, hindi sila magkakaibigan. Kasi isa lang ang mananalo. That’s just the dynamics of this competition. It’s a very, very exciting time for Tawag ng Tanghalan and I’m honored to be once again called a hurado,” he said.

Ogie also shared how his wife Regine Velasquez always inspires him to be a better artist each and everyday. “Perhaps the greatest singer that I know is my wife. Bias ko yun eh (laughs) kahit biased ako. For someone who is with her everyday, I see what I call the beautiful struggle. She always says na ngayon na may edad na siya and struggling with her voice, but she continues to try to improve herself. So kumbaga siya, rume-resbak din. Bumabalik pa rin siya but it’s because of the sheer love of wanting to perform,” he explained.

“Yung asawa ko kasi has this killer instinct. Parang ina-unleash niya. Na kapag nagpe-perform, kahit sasabihin niya, ‘Ay, wala akong boses ngayon,’ and then she stands up on stage and she does something fantastic. It’s like an out-of-body experience that she experiences and then she just does it. I think all of us have that. it’s just up to us how to tap and how to unleash that killer instinct.

"I think that’s what marks one performer from another. And when that happens, nararamdaman ng audience yun, nararamdaman naming mga hurado yun. Para siyang sweet spot that you tap into. And it doesn’t happen all the time. So you just have to keep on trying and trying. So it’s a matter of chance, it’s a matter of practicing that killer instinct,” he added.

Still going strong on its ninth season, Ogie believes that the longevity of Tawag ng Tanghalan goes beyond just being a popular segment on television.

“Sa tingin ko, it’s the format. Sobrang luma na ng format di ba? 1950s? Yung concept na may gong nung araw, inaabangan talaga yan eh. So yung concept na yun, ang tagal na tagal na. Halos parte na ng kultura natin. So I think in-embrace talaga yan ng madlang people. I also really want to commend the production, the producers, the writers. Sila yung mga nag-iisip nun eh. The thinktanks behind the cameras. So palagay ko yan ang sikreto. Kaming mgahurado, sino ba naman kami? Kami lang naman ang mag-ju-judge.

"I think it’s a magical formula. It’s a combination of everything. It’s the format, it’s the stories that all the contestants bring sa madlang people. It’s the story of winning and perhaps, losing but winning again. It ’s getting back on your feet for the sheer love of performing. Ang hirap maging singer 'no? Ang hirap pero ang sarap. Ang hirap talaga. Tinuring ang PIlipinas na haven ng pinakamagagaling na mang-aawit sa buong mundo,” he shared.
