Joel Torre has been in the entertainment business for 42 years. The actor attributes the longevity of his career to his love for his work.

"I love my job and that's what pinagbilin sa akin ni Vic Silayan, sabi niya... 'Joel, you have to love your job so that your job will love you back," he said in an interview with Boy Abunda.

Joel further explained that as an actor, investing in his craft has also been key to his longevity in the business. "True enough binubuhos mo 'yung lahat - your mind, body, and soul into your craft and binabalik rin namin sa'yo kasi kailangan you have full focus, you have to invest in yourself, invest in your craft," he said.

The actor further highlighted that the essence of an effective actor also lies in the harmony between the person and the artist.

He explained: "Ang differentiation ng actor and the person actually, the actor is only as good as the person, so an artist is only as good as the person itself. So kailangan, sabi ni Stanislavski (Russian theatre practitioner), actors daw are people who are ideal human beings because we study life... we study how people react and everything, mind, body, emotions and everything. You wander about life so as a person ganun ka rin dapat," he stated.

In the same interview, Joel was asked how he keeps his personal life private and draws the line at his professional life.

"As an actor iba 'yung acting and iba 'yung private [life] ko and sabi ng tatay ko talaga na binilin sa amin na, 'Joel always remember, you only have one name and make sure you take care of it,' so 'yun, iniingatan ko talaga 'yung name ko," he said.

Joel ventured into acting at the age seven as a member of Masskara theater group in Bacolod ran by the late director Peque Gallaga.

He starred in his first film, Oro, Plata, Mata in 1982.
