2024 RECAP: Celebrities who passed away this year

Several celebrities and personalities shocked the entertainment industry with their untimely deaths in 2024. Here are some of the stars who passed away this year:


Deo Endrinal

ABS-CBN Executive and Dreamscape head Deo Endrinal passed away in February. Deo’s son, PJ Endrinal, announced the unfortunate news on his social media. 

Celebrities shared their experiences working with the late Dreamscape Entertainment Head including Judy Ann Santos, Jodi Sta. Maria, Dimples Romana, Kim Chiu, Kris Aquino, Coco Martin, Julia Montes, among others.

ABS-CBN also held a special tribute to honor his contributions to the network and his impact on Kapamilya stars.

Jaclyn Jose

In March, renowned actress Jaclyn Jose passed away at the age of 60 due to a heart attack. Her daughter, Andi Eigenmann, confirmed the tragic news during a media conference on March 4.

 The unfortunate incident shocked the entertainment industry as the veteran actress was last seen as part of the Kapamilya primetime hit series FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.

During the conference, Andi expressed how her mother's legacy would live on forever through her work, children, grandchildren, and the many lives she touched. 

"Her undeniable legacy will definitely forever live on through her work, through her children, through her grandchildren, and the many lives she's touched as she herself, her life itself was her greatest obra maestra,” she said, holding back tears during their first media appearance after the news broke.


Cecille Baun

The family of Cecille Baun, dubbed as the Philippines’ Queen of Prosthetics, confirmed the passing of their matriarch at the age of 89. Cecille’s grandchild, Gary Paolo Valdez announced her passing in a Facebook post.

Leo Dominguez

OPM singer and songwriter Ogie Alcasid confirmed the passing of his close friend, talent manager Leo Dominguez, who managed several local stars under his talent company, LVD Management Corporation.

Ogie paid tribute to his mentor and friend on Instagram, writing, "You were the first person who told me that I could be a singer-songwriter back when we were in high school… The world just lost a priceless human being. Love you Leo Dominguez. Rest now with Jesus.” 


Carlo Caparas

Comic strip creator and writer-director Carlo J. Caparas, known for creating iconic superhero characters like Panday, Totoy Bato, Elias Paniki, Bakekang, and Gagambino, passed away at the age of 80 in May. 

Carlo’s daughter, Peach Caparas, confirmed the sad news on her Facebook account, paying tribute to her late father with a heartfelt poem.


Yoyong Martires

Philippine basketball legend, Olympian, and comedian Yoyong Martires, whose real name was Rosalio Martires, passed away at the age of 77 on June 18. His family has not disclosed the cause of death. Celebrities and public figures took to social media to pay tribute to the late athlete-turned-actor-turned-politician.

CJ De Silva-Ong

Former Promil "gifted child" CJ de Silva-Ong passed away at a young age on June 18. Her husband, Wincy Ong, confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that CJ had suffered two strokes caused by a brain aneurysm.


Manny Castañeda 

Actor and director Manny Castañeda has passed away at the age of 69 due to complications from heart and kidney ailments. His nephew, Michael Castañeda, confirmed the sad news on June 30.

Manny's close friend, Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chair and CEO Jose "Joey" Javier Reyes shared an emotional tribute on his Facebook page, recalling the time they spent together.


Chino Trinidad

Veteran sports journalist Chino Trinidad passed away on July 13 at the age of 56. Reports state that Chino succumbed to a heart attack while en route to a meeting at Newport World Resorts with Efren “Bata” Reyes and other personalities. He was rushed to San Juan de Dios Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Several personalities, athletes, and colleagues, including former Senator and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, award-winning journalist Jessica Soho, journalist Arnold Clavio, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, and Barangay Ginebra coach Tim Cone, paid tribute to the late sportscaster.

Mother Lily Monteverde and husband Remy Monteverde

Film producer and Regal Entertainment founder Lily Monteverde passed away at the age of 85 in early August. Her son, Goldwin Monteverde, confirmed her passing through a text message to GMA News Online.

Her death came just a day after the family laid to rest her husband, Remy Monteverde, who died on July 29 at the age of 86 due to pneumonia. According to their children, Roselle and Dondon, Mother Lily was in the ICU at the time of her husband's burial.

Celebrities who had worked with Regal Entertainment and Mother Lily mourned her loss, including Judy Ann Santos, Maricel Soriano, Vhong Navarro, Lovi Poe, Tirso Cruz III, Lotlot De Leon, Billy Crawford, Iza Calzado, and many others. 


Coritha

Philippine music legend Coritha passed away at the age of 73 on September 27. According to her sister, Dr. Digna Santos, Coritha's caregivers reported that her health began to deteriorate prior to her passing, with a weak pulse and difficulty breathing.

Earlier in 2024, Coritha suffered a stroke, and her condition gradually worsened. She was residing in Tagaytay at the time of her death.

Aegis member Mercy Sunot

Mercy Sunot, a member of the iconic Filipino rock band Aegis, passed away in November after a brave battle with cancer. She was 48 years old at the time of her untimely death.

Mercy had been in California, USA, undergoing treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer and lung cancer. Days before her passing, she shared an update on her social media, revealing that her medical team had found fluid in her lungs, which made breathing difficult. She requested prayers for her condition as she faced this challenge.


Liam Payne

Global fans of the widely popular British boy band One Direction mourned the passing of one of its members, Liam Payne, in October.

According to the Associated Press, local authorities reported that the singer tragically died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Liam’s fellow One Direction members Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan paid tribute to him, reflecting on their time together. The British artists were also seen attending Liam’s funeral, marking the first reunion since the band’s hiatus and Zayn’s departure in 2016.

Maggie Smith

The family of Harry Potter star Maggie Smith announced the passing of the veteran actress on September 27. While the cause of her death was not disclosed, it was reported that she had been hospitalized prior to her passing, according to a statement from Variety.

Maggie’s Harry Potter co-stars, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Tom Felton, were among those who paid tribute to the late actress.

The Oscar-winning actress, who passed at 89, was known for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise which she played from 2001 to 2011.
