Director Cathy Garcia Sampana launches her new talent management agency

<p>When blockbuster director Cathy Garcia-Sampana first got the idea to put up NICKL Entertainment a few years ago, she had not yet planned that it would branch out into having a talent management arm. She recently launched her talent agency, Klinik, which had a contract signing of its current roster of 19 artists last December 19 in Antipolo City.</p><p>NICKL was born when direk Cathy and her team started questioning why foreign artists would charge so much compared to local artists.</p><p>“Kinukuha namin yung BTS mag-concert nun tapos nung makita ko yung presyo, Diyos ko mahihimatay ako. If only a tenth of it can be paid to Filipino artists, ang saya sana. So sabi ko bakit naman ganun, ang talented naman ng mga Pinoy. Bakit hindi makaganun &#x27;no? So kailangan mahalin muna natin yung sariling atin. Tapos di ba pag director ako parang ang dami kong artistang parang gusto mo pauwiin kasi hindi marunong umarte. During their presscon, direk Cathy also shared plans to collaborate with ABS-CBN when it comes to her talents.</p><p>“Actually, I am going into partnership with them because I asked permission. Alam niyo naman na mahal ko yung ABS-CBN and I had to magpasintabi sa kanila and tell them what I am putting up. So sabi naman nila tita Cory (Vidanes), in fairness to tita Cory, ‘Why don’t you partner with Lauren (Dyogi)?’ Hindi lang nagkikita yung schedule namin pero we hope to. Kasi eventually these artists, yung mga batang ito, lumabas na sa pelikula ni KIm Chiu and Paulo Avelino ngayon at sa <em>Can’t Buy Me Love.</em> Kumbaga, tumatawid naman po. So I am very open with that partnership. Kami naman, with what’s best for talents,” she said. </p><p>Having been at the helm of some of the country’s most popular films, direk Cathy admitted to having had her share of frustrating moments on the set.</p><p>“Sa talents ako madalas kasi yung mga artista na, sa totoo lang hindi naman magiging artista kung OA na walang alam di ba? Nagkaroon na ako ng ganyan na naging trending rin kahit di pa uso nun ang social media. Meron lang kasing expectations lang.&quot;</p><p>She elaborated, &quot;Kasi kami sa production, pag kumukuha ng artista, may tiering or parang class. Not social class, class yan sa ano ang gagawin mo, palakad lakad ka lang? Ang tawag natin dun passersby. Merong bit players, ito naman yung mga may linya linya, isa, dalawa. At meron kang minor roles na ito yung talagang may character na nakapangalan sa script. Tapos of course the support roles and then the major roles. Madalas sa talents talaga ako medyo umiinit ang head kasi para silang talent na walang talent. Yun lagi ang term ko. Kasi dapat itanong mo sa sarili mo kung kaya mo din.&quot;</p><p>&quot;Wala naman akong problema kung gusto mo ng trabaho, pero nagtratrabaho din ako. And ang trabaho ko is to tell a story. Paano ko iti-tell yung story kung hindi mo mapangatawanan yung character na part ng script? So medyo masungit ako diyan. Medyo notorious ako diyan. Kasi grabe ang frustration level. Tayo, pinipilit mong mapaganda tapos bibigyan ka ng talent na ang hiningi mo driver, tapos pag dating hindi naman marunong mag-drive. Na-lurkey naman ako. Actually napagtanto ko yan eh, ang common sense hindi common eh. Kaloka talaga,” she recalled. </p><p>While shooting her latest film <em>Hello, Love, Again</em> in Canada, the Star Cinema director revealed her experience with the foreign talents they hired for the film. </p><p>“Wala (problema), actually. Siguro kasi sa ibang bansa trained talaga sila, hindi yung dumadampot kung saan saan. Kaya naman ang mahal nila. Kasi pagdating nila, they perform. Pati ang passersby, sila gumagawa ng sarili nilang gagawin at dialogue. Minsan ang kino-control ko na lang, colors. Kasi may colors ang bawat palette. Lalo na sa <em>Hello, Love, Again</em> may color palette per year. So yun lang. At saka yung presyo ng talents dun, yung passersby nila, minor role na natin yung bayad,” she added. </p><div> </div>
