MANILA -- Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach is pushing for cooperation among all sectors to raise awareness about AIDS, stressing that "our work continues" together with other advocates.

Wurtzbach on Sunday led the celebration of World AIDS Day in the Philippines as an ambassador of LoveYourself, where she was joined by actor Adrian Lindayag, radio jock Markki Stroem and transwoman-advocate Janlee Dungca.

During the event in Pasig City organized by the Department of Health, Wurtzbach and the other ambassadors underscored the importance of educating Filipinos on prevention and treatment for HIV.

"It's a global campaign, and I'm sure the rest of the world is doing their events like this," said Wurtzbach.

"I feel like the World AIDS Day is a time to reflect on what needs to be done, the lives that we've lost, but also the hope and the goal that is out there. That is very much achievable," she added.

Last October, the Department of Health reported that the country recorded 58 new HIV cases a day in the second quarter of the year.

The report also logged 5,321 new HIV cases during the April-June 2024 period, pushing the total recorded cases to 135,076.

Data from the United Nations show the Philippines has one of the world's fastest-growing epidemics. The new report forecasts that by the end of 2024, there will be 215,400 estimated people living with HIV in the country.

According to Wurtzbach, one of the campaigns that they aim to amplify is the "U=U" campaign. This means that if the virus in the body is undetectable, then it is untransmittable. Lorenz Olleres, a person living with HIV, is proof -- he has been undetectable for 11 years.

Wurtzbach stressed that HIV is no longer a death sentence.

"It is possible to live a healthy long life, if you can take that step into getting treatments - consistent treatments to reach an undetectable status. It is very much possible. Testing is there, it's free. Provided to us by the DOH, strong partners with the private sectors. Treatment is also free," she pointed out.

"Our work continues because, unfortunately every year the cases go up but that doesn't mean we will stop with our work. Hopefully we reach that 2030 goal of ending AIDS," the beauty queen said.

Wurtzbach will take part in the annual "Love Gala" on December 3, where she will auction a handful of her Miss Universe clothes, gowns, tiara and accessories to raise funds for the youth center that LoveYourself is planning to put up. -- with a report from Rowegie Abanto, ABS-CBN News
