Regine Velasquez on not competing with younger artists: ‘I’m just being realistic’

Kapamilya singer-actress Regine Velasquez-Alcasid took to her official TikTok account to share her thoughts about her 40-year long career in the industry. The Magandang Buhay host broke her silence after her loyal fans expressed their disappointment about a poster that was uploaded where the Asia’s Songbird was seemingly placed in a smaller photo compared to the rest of the younger artists.

The poster has since been deleted and apologies were sent to Regine, which she also shared on her Instagram account.

Regine admitted that her time of being always on top has already passed. She claimed that this wasn’t a bad thing as she already earned the respect of the entertainment industry, which is a worthy feat in itself.

“Today, I wanted to talk to you about me saying it’s no longer my time because for some reason people get upset whenever I say that. Don’t panic, don’t get upset, it's not a bad thing,” she began. “I’m just being realistic because it’s true. It’s no longer my time. That means I can no longer compete with the young ones.”

The 54-year-old Kapamilya singer added that, while she feels she still has what it takes to compete alongside the new generation of talented artists, she no longer wishes to do so.

“I have been in the industry for almost 40 years. I have been singing all my life and the truth is, even if I still can compete, I really don’t want to anymore. Galing akong singing contest and half my career, feeling ko kailangan ko magcompete kasi ine-establish ko ‘yung sarili ko,” she said.

“I don’t want to do that anymore,” she stated. “Sa ngayon, ine-enjoy ko ‘yung life ko. Ine-enjoy ko ‘yung respect na nakukuha ko from my peers. Hindi mo basta-basta nakukuha ‘yun ah. It’s not just given to you for no apparent reason–– you earn that.”

For Regine, she considers herself more as a mentor now: someone who will be guiding the new pool of artists in the right direction. She claimed that it’s her way of sharing what she has learned throughout her career.

“I love that I inspire other artists. Really, I consider myself as a mentor now. I love mentoring new artists,” she shared. “That’s why ‘pag tinatanong nila ako kung pwede ako mag-guest sa concert nila, I’m there. Kasi gusto ko rin bigyan sila ng mga pointers kasi nagtatanong din naman sila.”

At this point in her career, Regine feels her experience is put to better use as an inspiration for the younger generation, rather as a tool for her to compete with them. In fact, she finds joy in sharing her wisdom with them.

“Parang sayang naman ‘yung mga experiences at ‘yung mga learnings na nakuka ko all throughout the 40 years kung ibabaon ko lang ‘yun sa lupa. I thought it would be good to share it, ‘yung knowledge na na-accumulate ko through the years. It’s a good thing. I love that. They listen to me and that’s wonderful,” she continued.

Regine maintained that she is happy where she is now, both in her career and in her life outside the industry.

“That’s another side of me that I am enjoying so much: I love being the wife, I love supporting my husband, I love being a mom. Siyempre ang pagiging artist, nasa DNA ko na ‘yun, pero meron akong buhay. I love that I have that otherwise wala akong ibang iniisip kung hindi ‘yung career ko,” she ended.
