Gerald Anderson explained why he initially hesitated to talk about his recent heroic acts when he rescued families during the recent typhoon Carina.

"Ang daming mas deserving. I think they are a lot of rescuers and volunteers na nandun din," he said in an interview with Bernadette Sembrano in her latest YouTube vlog.

He added: "Siyempre ako nagkataon celebrity ako, so na-picturan, na-post. But it took me time to realize na ba’t hindi ko na lang ito gamitin to highlight 'yung ibang rescuers or volunteers, even 'yung mga nagdo-donate, to say also thank you to them."

Gerald was recently promoted to being an auxiliary captain of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

"I just want to use this as an inspiration, set an example para sa mga kapwang artista, even with normal people," he remarked.

Gerald shared that it was his parents who inspired him to join the PCG. Gerald's father, Gerald Anderson, Sr., was part of the US Navy.

"He was 30 years sa US Navy, retired navy siya. Pinanganak ako sa Subic Bay. ‘Dun siya naka-destino, ‘dun niya nakilala nanay ko," he shared. "I think nasa dugo namin din 'yung duty and service, call of duty, so I think 'yun  naturally nakuha ko."

The Kapamilya star also highlighted that the selfless act of his mom, Evangeline Opsima, also inspired him to be part of the PCG.

"Sa mom ko, may mga moments, days na gipit kami, pero 'pag may nanghihingi sa kanya, binibigay niya. ‘Yung parang she will go above and beyond para makatulong sa iba," he said.

The actor further pointed out: "Siguro naturally, nakuha ko lang 'yun sa kanila. That's why I cannot take credit for everything, or 'yung mga acts, because it's things I learned, it's things na nakuha ko sa mga magulang ko."

In August, Gerald received the "Search and Rescue Medal" from the PCG for his heroic acts during the typhoon Carina onslaught.

PCG Spokesperson, CG Rear Admiral Armando Balilo, highlighted that the actor has been "an active partner of the Command, especially during humanitarian and disaster response operations."

"He is always present during the Coast Guard’s relief operations and disaster rehabilitation. He continues to help Aetas in Zambales, recovering families in Marawi, and even donated medical supplies and tents during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.
